I don't think the location is that bad. I mean, it's midtown West, close to Carnegie Hall. Maybe it's more popular with the business crowd and so busy on the weeknights? Who knows?

We ate at Babbo for our recent 35th anniversary, and frankly, we thought it was too noisy/crowded/not romantic. Not sorry we went, but wouldn't recommend it for a romantic anniversary place, even in the upstairs room, where we were seated.
