nyc-met museum tour

We plan to go to the Met on our Labor Day weekend trip. I saw the museum highlight tour on their website; it starts at 10:30 am. Is this a good tour to do to get a broad view of the museum? Time is short and I'll have 15 and 9 yr old with me. Will it be very crowded then?

Thanks.

Yes. A good tour.
Another suggestion: Have the Met 'guide' sent to you ahead of time. The 'guide' is really a thick paperback that lists the works in their collection.

Read the guide ahead of time and hone in on the few things you really want to investigate. You will be delighted at how much famous 'stuff' is at the Met.

I would not go to the Met on a Sunday. It is so crowded on Sunday and even on a tour you may not get a close look at some of the more important works.

Our only options are Fri afternoon, Sat morning and Sun. I see that they are closed on Mon. What's our best bet?

Thanks.

I would be there waiting on the steps when they open, if I were you. This is what we did on Art History class trips (on Saturdays). This way, you get there ahead of the crowd. By the time you're ready for lunch, the museum is filling up and you may well be ready to leave. Or you may feel like staying the rest of the day. At least you will have had the morning to see the museum at its best (in my opinion).

We went on the tour and absolutely loved it! Unfotunately, we only had a few hrs.(you could easily spend a day)and thus took the tour. Our guide asked us what we wanted to see and/or if we had preferences and then proceeded to show us relevant areas of the museum. We definately saw a lot of things in relatively short amount of time. I would highly recommend it to any and all!

You should be okay if you get to the museum in the mornings on Saturday and Sunday. It doesn't start to get crowded until the afternoon. Also, it should not be that crowded on the Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend.
As for the tour, since I'm not sure exactly where the tour goes, I'm not sure if that's the best way to spend your children's time. Not knowing their interests, I would guess that they would most likely enjoy the Temple of Dendur and the Egyptian wing. If your youngest is a son, he probably will also enjoy the arms and armor exhibit.
What are your children's interests?
