NYC in the summer

Message: Want to spend my 4th year anniversary in NYC--live in MA and can't stay out for too long b/c of work. Anyways, looking for achic, trendy hotel(wondering if the Ian Schrager hotels are still in?), and if have any nightlife musts, please pass the info along. We are both 30 going on 20, fun and partying is still a must..Thanks for the reply in advance...Some restaurant suggestions will also be appreciated, but I know Zagat is a good reference..

Stayed at the Hudson last week. Apparently still very in, because the place was just hopping every night. Bar is very trendy and strangely beautiful. Library with its central pool table was a great place for couples to hang out. I particularly liked the guest only terrace space on the 15th floor, a peaceful oasis in a bustling place. Make no mistake though, everything people say about the rooms being small is right on, a japanese businessman would feel cramped. I didn't mind that so much, but I did mind feeling like an elderly cogger because I'm barely over 40. Even if you're going on 20, your 30 years may feel a bit motherly/fatherly to the youngsters hanging at the Hudson.

Thanks for the input sgorge--yes, I have too heard the rooms are small, but I'd rather that, than stay in a hotel with the typical mother, father and kids routine...We still very much like the bar scene, and I have also heard that the Hudson is difficult to enter unless you are a guest--so that might also be a perk to stay there. Do you happen to know if staying at the Royalton, they might be able to let you go to their sister hotels' bar?

I LOVE the W Hotels. chic and pampering. Join Starwood's hotel program and save up points for future stays (it is $$$$$)

I just booked a weekend at the Library Hotel. I am really excited about it. Sounds like a great boutique hotel. The whole them is a library theme -- the floors are divided into the Dewie Decimal categories and the furnishings are reminiscent of the W's. Location is excellent. Right across the street from the NY Public Library which I hear has a great tour. Best thing...it's less than a year old, so you know it's in good condition.

It was between that one and the W Tuscany. But the Library offered Fri/Sat/Sun rates of $175/night versus the Tuscany which was $159 for Fri and Sat, but jumped to $219 for Sun night.

APC, let me get this straight, you will be spending $525 over 3 nights and your decision came down to a savings of $12?

I needed something to help me decide. They were neck and neck.

Chill out.

Though I have not stayed there I would suggest the W Hotel at Union Square (it is ablock from my house, so I do know the vibe of the place)--people staying/working there are as hip-looking as you can find, and you are downtown, which puts you near the club world, if that's what you plan to do. You're near all the Union Square subways (4,5,6,N,R,L) to get everyplace else.

There's also the Soho Grand hotel, in Soho. Both these plaes are mega-hip as far as I know.

You made the right choice in choosing the Library over the W Tuscany. We stayed at the W Tuscany in February (Paid $ 249 then) and were not impressed at all. The room was large and furnished very elegantly but the lobby was pathetic. Just a small room with a desk and a tiny area with modular seating for about 6 people. I know minimalism is in but this was ridiculous. I felt like I was entering an apartment in a not so upscale building. I was very disappointed with the W.

Thanks for the advice for the library, and the W Hotel. They do sound like awesome hotels, but another thing I was curious about was staying at the Hudson which is near Central Park. Is that a nice part of the city to stay, or is midtown a better choice??

Read previous post about the Hudson.
Many, many complaints about rooms only big enough for one double bed!

Neighborhood choice is relative--"nice"
"midtown" and "chic" aren't necessarily the same. What specificially do you wnat to be near?
A quieter area?
In the middle of the lights of Times Square? Nearby but a couple of blocks away?
Near Soho restaurants, galleries, clubs?

I would rather be somewhere quiet, and for the excitement, can take a cab or subway..Don't particularly care for the hectic Times Square area..And not familiar with the Soho area.
