NYC hotel prices week of January 9--why so high?
Does anyone know why prices for the week of January 9th are so high? Some hotels don't have any availability at all. I've made a lot of reservations in NYC since early December so I know what the rates have been, and that particular week has been a challenge. I found somewhere to stay, so I don't need suggestions--I just wondered what was going on?

I didn't stay there was a shortage of hotel rooms. The places I've been staying are either sold out or have much higher rates than I've been seeing. We have a place to stay so I was just curious as I though January was the low season. I haven't had a problem with MLK week, but we aren't arriving until Monday night.

Where are you trying to stay? We are there that same week and The (Kimpton) Muse is amazingly cheap -- nearly $200 below mid December pricing. Just got a post card from The Blakely for stays in Jan and Feb at extremely low prices. Quikbook is offering all kinds of deals on NY hotels in January.

The Muse was booked for our dates when I last checked, but it does look like a great place to stay and is in an area that works for us. I hope to try them out some time. Have fun!
My husband's company is paying for the room, so we have to be conservative on price and it has to be cancellable. We have to switch hotels after our first night next week, but I'm okay with that.

Have you looked on www.travelzoo.com ? There might be something for your dates there.

Tavelzoo has the Beekman Tower (an dAffinia property) king studio suite for $129 that weekend- and you get upgraded to a king one bedroom suite w/full kitchen and living room.

Sometimes the problem with "deals" on Travel Zoo, Quikbook, Travelocity, et al. is that they are not usually cancellable. They are more often, fully pre-paid with no cancellation without forfeit. However, in January, a bit of research seems to show NY overrun with bargains.

I'm hardly making it up, mclaurie. The Doubletree that I booked for $143 this week was over $300 (when I last checked) if I book starting on Sunday, and the Hampton Inn I like is not available at all. Anyway, as I said three times already, LOL, I have my rooms booked!

True, but I started working on this booking a few weeks ago and with other weeks, that has not been a problem. That's not far in advance, but I have no choice in that. Actually, a vacancy opened up yesterday at my first choice, so I was able to book 4 out of 5 nights there. I'm satisfied.

TC: Yes, I always watch for the non-refundable rates as I am NEVER willing to book those; my plans change too often.
The deal I got for my upcoming trip to NYC on Travelzoo for a rm. at the Wyndham and the one I quoted from Travelzoo at the Beekman Tower are not nonrefundable rates. They can be cancelled the day before arrival with no charge.
But yes, you do have to watch for those pesky non-refundable rates.
