NYC Hotel for First Time Visit

We will be visiting NYC for the first time in April. Looking for hotel recommendations in midtown area for $300 a night range. We are traveling with another couple. We want to be located close to the theatre district, central park.
Any favorite hotels or recommendations would be appreciated.

Le Parker Meridian would be a perfect hotel for your first time visit. Only a couple of blocks to both Central Park and Times Square. It is also very close to Rockefeller Center, Saks, Tiffany, St. Patricks Cathedral, and within walking distance to the museums.

The Palace has a deal for $305 including a bottle of wine, full breakfast for two and parking. It is across the street from St. Patricks cathedral and Saks, close to other shopping and Central Park, and within walking distance to the theater district, yet not right in the middle of things.
Lower floors have a view of the cathedral (impressive) upper floors have a great view of the city. I have never had an unpleasant stay there.

The hotel taxes are really steep in NYC, so remember, a $250 room is probably going to end up costing nearly $300 per night.

I highly recommend the San Carlos hotel on East 50th street. We have stayed there a number of times and were just there in December. The hotel was totally renovated last year, has great rates (for NYC) and is in an excellent location - close to the theatre, central park, grand central, 5th ave shopping, 2nd ave restaurants. I can't say enough good things about it.
