NYC fun...on a student budget

A friend and I are taking a spring break trip to New York City this month -- a first time for both of us. We'll be attending a convention and staying at the Marriott Marquis on Broadway.
We want to do as much as we can in a week's time -- but without thousands to spend.
Any advice on the best things to see and do?

I would suggest that you take a tour of the city to get a bit acclimated to the lay of the land and that way you'll get an overview of things. The concierge desk at your hotel can make the arrangements for you. If you have student IDs you can get discounts into all the museums. There are many terrific museums and if you have an interest in art you can make an entire trip just visiting them. But you should definately see the Metropolitan Museum of Art and for another the Museum of Modern Art is great and the Guggenheim Museum(designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) is certainly worth a visit. Go to Central Park-see the Strawberry Fields memorial to John Lennon, go shopping in Soho, go to the top of the Empire State Building. If you're early risers you can go over to Rockefeller Center and stand outside the"Today Show" and wave to Katie, Matt, Al and Anne. Stroll through Greenwich Village and the upper west side. For cheap food get a hot dog at Gray's Papaya(Broadway and 72nd), also there are quite a few Chinese noodle shops where you can get pretty good food pretty cheap(try Mee Noodle Shop at 2nd and 49th). You can visit the New York Stock Exchange for free-they have a viewers gallery where you can watch the goings-on. Read up on what's current in New York Magazine and Time Out New York. Have a great time!

In no particular order...

1)Staten Island Ferry - free and the best view of the city that you can get; just ride out and back
2) The Frick Museum - awesome collection and structure; cheap and esy to see the whole collection in a few hours
3) Happy hour at Windows on the World in WTC tower; spend $4 on a big soda or a beer, nurse it and enjoy the view
4) Dinner at L'Ecole - corner of Broadway and Grand in SoHo. $25 price fixe dinner that would cost $60 anywhere else in town - run by the French Culinary Institute - make reservations in advance.
5) The tap room at the Knitting Factory on Leonard Street between Broadway and Church (a few blocks from L'Ecole). Usually no cover charge for thsi part of the facility and great brew on tap with very hip live music. Some of the best progressive/avant garde music in the world available upstairs in the performance space w/admission fee (but usually reasonable)
6) El Pollo restaurant at 90th Street and First Ave. South American restaurant famous for its Peruvian barbecue chicken, huge portions and reasonable prices
7) The Pink Tea Cup - oldest soul food restaurant in the Village; incredible pulled pork, some of the tastiest collards I've ever had and a big dinner including soup and dessert is $10-13
8) Find "Mr. Cheap's New York", a paperback by Bob Adams Publishing; no way youi'll EVER have time to do all the cheap/free stuff in here!
9) Find a copy of "The Village Voice" when you get there - it's free and comes out on Wednesdays. All the cool/free/cheap stuff for the upcoming weekend is listed
10) Chinatown - just walking around.
11) The best of all: get a cup of java and just hang out anywhere, but especially places like Washington Square Park. An endless stream of great people watching opportunities.

Don't forget - as of Jan 1 '99, MTA has an all-you-can-ride subway/buss pass for $4 per day.

on a budget?

take the 2,3 train to Chambers Street, walk over to City Hall on Tuesday or Friday, get some green market food and cider, and take a free excursion, over the Brooklyn Bridge, into Brooklyn Heights, see a half price flick, go to the Promenade, then bring a bottle of wine over the Bedouin Cafe, and have the awesome lentil soup.

then catch the A train back to the madness of Times Square.
