a group of 6 of us will be spending new years eve in new york this year. We have traveled as a group in the past and love getting an apartment or 2 as it usually is cheaper and of course gives you more space. Does anyone know of reputable apartments that might rent for 1 week time periods?

We also are looking for restaurants that might be having dinner and then a party for the midnight celebration- medium budget, nice food.

People on this board have liked and recommended Radio City Apartments, so you might start there. This is one of the most expensive times of the year in NYC, so you should try to book asap. Many hotels are already sold out.

I can't help you with a midnight dinner spot since that's something I'd never personally do. My only suggestion would be to look away from the Midtown and Upper West Side areas. These will be the busiest and most expensive. A lot of places do offer some kind of New Year's celebration.

You can also look www.newyork.craiglist.com for short term apartment rentals. You can check back here with specific questions about location, etc. and people here can try to answer your questions.

Oh Radio City Apartments look exactly like what we want but also looks to be already fully booked.

I think most places will be booked. The Craigslist approach may be the best approach.

You might try some of the hotel websites, but this is the busiest time of year in the city so most of the hotels are probably already booked, and if you are set on coming take whatever you can find and FAST.

Large apartments are not plentiful and tend to be pricey. I would look at 2 or even 3 apts. at one of the Affinia.com hotels.

How much did you want to spend per person per night?

I saw your post earlier, and I just got off the phone with NYhabitat about another matter. I asked if they still had apartments over Christmas, New Year's and he said yes. They also have some that are in the same buidlings, so I think it would be worth a call to them and see what they can offer. That's a lot easier than weeding through the hundreds of places on their website.

We have booked the Giraffe Hotel (I've read good things....)

there will be 4 to 6 of us, all mid 30's, we live around the world and get together in various places (russia, italy, etc), all professionals w/o kids, good food, medium budget, dancing would be good but not a meat market per se!

alright we are all set with our apartment, new years eve activities, ect. But I'm wondering if you all might be able to tell me what will be open/closed on Jan 1st in NYC??

Will we be able to go skating at rock center maybe? or visit ground zero? how about shopping- Bloomingdales, small boutiques, etc? Restaurants? Bar?

idon't think alot of the stores will be open on Jan 1, but all the skating rinks will be open, Woolman Rink, Rock Center and Bryant Park would all be good bets.

Most chain stores, (department stores, Gap etc) will be open. Small stores may or may not be open at the whim of the owners.It depends on the neighborhood too.
Some museums (the Met) are closed but The Museum of Modern Art and the Natural History will be open.
Most restaurants are open

I know you said you've booked NYE, but I came across a listing of NYE events on the village voice (weekly newspaper) and thought it was well organized.

For Jan. 1, the skating rinks are definitely open. Some stores are open with sales. Lots of folks have long lingering brunches/lunches so many many restaurants are open. The Boat House in Central Park could be fun with skating before or after.

Or, probably not as touristy, Telepan is a newish "hot" restaurant on the upper west side with a nice brunch. (btw, their NYE dinner for $125 looks very nice too).

Locals will go to the movies. Spring Awakening is the only show on Broadway with a performance (matinee at 2 pm) and there are still tickets.

We actually cancelled our Giraffe ressies and have an apartment on the UES!

I am going to the final performance of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company at the New York City Centre at 7pm on NYE. The box office told me it should finish around 9pm, so enough time to do something else if this is what you fancy.
