NY Trip Report
Just returned from 8 days in NY State - the first 3 days (actually, 3 nites, 2 days) in NYC. If the budget allowed, we would have stayed longer! NYC is great. Hadn't been there in about 20 years and we are already talking about "next time".
Stayed at The Gorham (55th between 6th/7th). We loved this hotel. Small, botique-ish, excellent location, staff, and most importantly - the room was perfect for the 3 of us. (DH + 13 Yr. old) Beds were queen size, VERY comfortable! We were amazed how well we slept. DH and I are very early risers, but even I slept till 8:30 one morning. Amazing. We'd stay here again and highly recommend it. Paid $139 per night. Their website.
Even tho we didn't arrive till after 8PM, decided to take a walk to Times Square and have some pizza. It was a great way to get a short introduction to the city for DH and Kid. Luckily we were beat from the full day of travel and the excitement of the city didn't keep us up too late.
Next day ate breakfast at a near by diner (Park Diner) on 55th and 7th. Okay food. Basic breakfast fare. DH went to the Amer. Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium at the Rose Center while daughter and I went shopping. He raved about the planetarium show, saying it was the most amazing thing he's ever seen. It made him feel SO insignifcant in this vast universe. So, that is a MUST see.
We went shopping at Hearald Square and daughter rode the subway for the first time. Anyone who knows 13 year old girls, can imagine her awe at Herald Square and all the shops. She was in heaven. Did Macy's, H&M, and several other stores that I can't remember...
Met at hotel at 4:30 to rest our very tired feet and get ready for dinner and Hairspray. Dinner at a Chinese Restaurant on 7th and 55th. Name escapes me, but it was fantastic. The BEST egg rolls, soup, dumplings, etc. etc. Very reasonably priced, excellent service. They did have all you can eat sushi. There were several Asian families eating there as well. Usually a good sign.
After dinner took a walk to 5th ave to stop at FAO and walk on the Avenue. Then, on to Hairspray. Excellent, upbeat and a great experience.
Day 2 - Bought bagels (Pick-a-bagel - 57th/7th) and walked 3 blocks to Central Park to have our b'fast there.
Took the subway to the Empire State Building and did the touristy stuff. Next on to Ground Zero. After that walked to the South Street Seaport and took the cruise line tour of the Harbor - Statute of Liberty and Ellis Island for pics. The captain of this tour does a great job narrating and telling his stories. It's obvious he enjoys his work and he's interesting to hear. Highly recommended.
Back to the hotel and after dinner took a cab to Serendipity for the most heavenly desserts! ( long line. Were told it would be an hour, but was only about 15 minutes. Apparently several people decided they couldn't wait, which was great for us....) I had the mousse, daughter had the Frozen Hot Chocolate, and DH had a hot fudge sundae that was SO decadent! Wow. We left there fat and sassy for sure.
Next day left for upstate (near Albany) to visit family. I am always reminded how beautiful upsate NY is whenever I visit. Brother lives in a small town (Delanson) that so absolutely beautiful. Winding roads, farms, acres and acres of rolling hills, with huge trees and mountains for a far away backdrop. Like my DH commented, driving through such picture perfect areas just makes all the stress melt away...
Did the family things, saw old friends (one I hadn;t seen in 25 years...) went to Saratoga Racetrack to lose some money, and boating on the great Sacandaga Lake. Just beautiful. (We've decided that some of our future lottery winnings will be spent buying a summer home on this lake.)
NY is a great state, and NYC is like no other. It was great going home again!

Great Report, Austin ...I just read your comments on the "What I Did Last Summer" thread and had to go dig up your August report. One thing about Fodor's new system: I like how you can pull up posts made by an individual poster.
Anyway - thanks for the neat trip report. Glad your vacation was so awesome.
