Inexpensive places to eat abound:
For breakfast: have beignets and cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde; Croissant d'Or in the 600 block of Ursulines has great pastry; Clover Grill on the corner of Bourbon and Dumaine has great waffles and omelets at diner prices (they also have good burgers and are open 24 hours)
For lunch/dinner: split a muffaletta from Central Grocery on Decatur; Port of Call in the 800 block of Esplanade (corner of Dauphine and Esplanade) for the best burgers in town; grab a po-boy at Verde Mart on the lower end of Royal (or at almost any corner grocery in the Quarter); Redfish Grill in the 100 block of Bourbon is a place I always recommend - it's one of the Brennan's places, but it's lower key and less expensive than the others (Commander's, Palace Cafe, etc.); Angeli on Decatur; Mother's on the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Poydras (in the CBD) for po-boys, gumbo, etc.; and have a Lucky Dog in Jackson Square. Please let me know if you need more info.

Denise, in general the options you mention are not very good, especially the Crescent on Canal (very bad!). Perhaps a B&B will give you more bang for the buck. Check out www.marigny.net for some of the French Quarter area B&Bs. www.bedandbreakfast.com is another good research tool. March is busy, so book soon!
