NORTH OR SOUTH LAKE TAHOE?
Will be going to Lake Tahoe first week in December and was wondering if we should stay North or South of Lake Tahoe? Will be snowboarding and want to enjoy the best views of the lake. Would also like some time playing in casinos. Any suggestions or opinions on which area is best for these? TIA!

My family likes Heavenly, Squaw Valley or Alpine Meadows best for skiing. The casinos are only located in Nevada, so most of them are on the South Shore. If not gambling we like the North Shore/Tahoe City area best.

I've read where you can actually have a picnic and sit by the lake? Where is that from, North or South?
Oh, and do you know its pouring rain here on the Big Island today, for several days now, so its been a challenge to stay dry

And if you want a view while staying warm 
go to Harrah's casino, follow the signs to the buffet, take the elevator to the 18th floor, enjoy the view. Going to the buffet or the restaurant up there is optional

Ag3046 is wrong. The state line goes down through the middle of the lake and there is CA and NV at both ends. AND there are casinos at both ends.
The best view of the entire lake is either from the Heavenly Valley Tram at the south end -- or from the Mt Rose road at the north end.
One of the best places to sit by the lake for a picnic (though not much picnic weather in Dec) is at Sand Harbor on the NE corner of the lake near Incline Village.

You can sit by the lake at places all around the lake.

Agreed, Sand Harbor is a great place - - also agreed, I don't think you are going to want to picnic much in December. Better to cozy up to the fire and stay warm! If you are on the North side, the Sunnyside is a lodge/restaurant on the lake with a nice view and good food.

The first week of Dec you should know is still really early in the snow season. Many times (usually?) the snow is not very good. If there has been any measurable snowfall then some places like Northstar, Heavenly and Boreal will be making snow like mad so that they have some runs open for Thanksgiving.
Knowing this, and wanting to snowboard, I would stay on the north side where you'd have access to more than Heavenly. Though in the south there is Sierra at Tahoe near Twin Bridges and Kirkwood - over 35 minute drive on the north side there are about a dozen resorts to choose from.
The casino scene in Tahoe is centered in south shore but there are 3 small casinos at Crystal bay and then the Hyatt in Incline has a tiny casino. In the north many ski resorts have shuttles so you don't necessarily have ot drive all over. Getting from the south to the north would, in general, mean you'd have to drive.

Yep, plenty of rain and that is the reason why I didn't attend the Hoolaulea as I did go the past two years and enjoyed the free entertainment as well as the food I will definitely check out the Sunnyside Lodge. We've been to Squaw Valley and Heavenly in Jan, but not to Alpine. Do you know if there is snow tubing in Alpine as I enjoy tubing more than snowboarding...ha ha
Suzie~ Thanks for the info. We will be renting a car as the GPS has been a wonderful invention and we can't leave home without it now when we travel. So, safe to say about a 35-minute drive from North to South? I was thinking we'd be there for 5 days so would love to explore both sides of the lake and enjoy all that it has to offer. I'm an avid picture taker and want to get great shots of the Lake to blow up later and hang in my home.

Absolute best view of Lake Tahoe is while skiing down the Ridge Run at Heavenly Valley.
The casinos in North Tahoe are pretty pathetic compared to South Tahoe except for the CalNeva resort. CalNeva was owned by Frank Sinatra and you can still rent the cabins that JFK, Marilyn Monroe and Frank stayed in. I won $1000 there and so have fond memories of staying in JFKs cabin.

I can't remember if there is tubing at Alpine. For tubing we take our family to Granlibakken on the north side. There is a link from the map that I referred to earlier. If you are going to be there five days and the weather cooperates, you should definately drive around the lake. There are views all around and each one is different and beautiful. No. I was referring to the post that said the north casinos were all "pathetic". I guess I should have repeated that same word, but picked up on the word "dump" instead, because it was particularly inappropriate for the Hyatt.
Incidentally my partner's sister-in-law (Northstar residents) loves CalNeva as that's the only place she says she always walks out with winnings. But, of course, you're right. She calls it a dump too.
