Duke (and a bunch of universities in NC) have a large number of New Jersey residents. Back in my college time it was because of the cheap out-of-state tuition. That doesn't apply for Duke, but it does have a good number of people from NJ attending. So jokingly, Duke has become the University of New Jersey at Durham.

By the way, over the weekend I saw tons of cars with out-of-state license plates. Thousands of students back in town.

Oh, well, there's no perfect paradise. At least not yet.

GoT, Similar remarks get made about William & Mary and UVA because of the large percentage of out-of-state students from NY, NJ and PA. First rate education at a bargain price.

Oh my GOD!! I cannot believe some of these posts?? Isnt this supposed to be a website for people who are looking for opinions and suggestions on travel or relocating? It's gotten to be a B*tch session.

My objective to post on this site was to obtain opinions from those of you who live in these areas.

There is no mention of the "cost" of living anywhere in my post, so why would someone "assume" such a thing?

Consult my post again.

As for LeahinSC, I took no offense to anything you said in your posts. You were honest and gave your honest opinion and I thank you for that. You were probably right on with your comments and no one should take offense to it if it's the TRUTH

Ellijay- If I lived next door to you I'd love to come to your church!

TheWeasel - I couldnt have said it any better! Great minds do think alike!

What I am having trouble with is that crazy ranting session from Diana LOL!!

All I said was that Cape Hatteras was too rural for my liking. What in Gods name does that have to do with being to good, or Cosmopolitan or not wanting to be in an area with backward people??? Irrational minds produce irrational comments. You remind me of a big nasty horse fly just waiting to be swatted. : ) Love you too honey! Muah

Thanks for all your informative posts.

Yes, I guess in the South I will be called a Yankee but up North we're all Americans.

"We are pretty laid back people and are looking for an area that has a decent cost of living. NJ is out of control!"

Perhaps this is where the responder made that assumption.

Relocating to N and S Carolina is a frequently discussed topic on this forum. If you do a search on any of the towns or cities mentioned here you'll find lots of opinions (some of them contentious) from people who've moved to the area from the NE as well as from homegrowns.

Wow, I can't believe how nasty people are getting on this thread. Having lived in Mpls and San Francisco I haven't been exposed to this type of talk. I didn't realize there was still such a strong divide between North and South. It's sad to hear.

Yes, we are an opinionated bunch. And sometimes, we have more than one opinion on a subject (and is subject to change).

You seem to handle yourself well so welcome aboard. Most of us are friendly (well, some of us are friendly most of the time).

Usually the worst debates around here are on spelling and grammar. If goofs like its for it's doesn't bother you, you'll do fine.

If you end up in North Carolina, pick your basketball team NOW. And I'm not Nets vs. Knicks.

Also learn the finer points of barbeque. Learn 'eastern' and 'western' and why they are different.

Um, hate to be the one to point this out but there are many many parts of North and South Carolina that are much more expensive than New Jersey, New York, Penn, Conn, etc.

I grew up in New Jersey, went to college in Michigan, joined my employer in New York (upstate), and then moved to Raleigh, NC. My advice; rent. People love it or they hate it... I hated it. If I tried this experiment now (knowing what I know) - I'd keep the options open.

I told my oldest son we would stay until he graduated high school (private school because the Raleigh schools are so weak). The moving van packed up our things the day of his high school graduation.

Whatever you decide, good luck to you.

Tam: you did specifically mention "cost of living". I certainly hope you didn't consider my post a negative one. I merely want to warn you that there will be trade offs you have to make. Not just in the South but anywhere. My husband is a transplant, and there are things he hates about the South...but he's been here over 20 years so I guess the good outweighs the bad for him.

At the risk of offending you again, I think you should take another scroll through the posts. If you took out Diana's posts and the replies to them, you would have a perfectly civil discussion. If you get all upset at perceived slights, people will say you are "techy" (touchy) - free old-South dialect lesson.

I am not offended at all, should I be? What I am stating is that the cost of living in NJ is outrageous. NJ has become the State with the highest property taxes in the nation!! Not to mention the most corrupt. We are choosing to relocate based on the facts above and many other aspects. We want a better way of life and a more "normal" standard of living for our son and each other. We dont want something for nothing. I don't know if I can be more specific than this. When I let me husband read these posts he was appalled at the way my inital post had been raped, dissected and misconstrued by some. And just let me clarify something, I didnt start this mud slinging and as a Northerner I won't duck either.

Diana- I started this thread to get opinions and advice about relocation to the Carolinas. I've enjoyed many of the comments made by some very helpful people. You have been nothing but negative since your first post so if you're not going to add anything constructive would you please go and police another thread.

Thank you all for your time and suggestions.

Peace

Carol Ann...hope this whole experience hasn't put you off using Fodor talk. It seems like certain questions can unleash a firestorm of emotional responses and I guess this was one of them and I'm sure my opinions caused some of that for a few.
I've found many of these same people to be extraordinarily informative and helpful about travel and restaurant tips for a number of places. As it seems you have already done, sometimes you just have to sift out what you can use and disregard the rest. best wishes.

If you hold fast to "2 hours to the beach" then you limit yourself to eastern NC and SC. So, it will be Ralegh/Research Triangle and the NC beaches, or Charleston in SC. Mt. Pleasant in SC may be a candidate for you.
Does NJ have a state income tax?

Gretchen, I think NJ has one of the highest state income taxes in the country and the property taxes have to be in the top three.

Every state employee I know in the state of New Jersey makes something like $100,000 a year including teachers, law enforcement, fire fighters (of course not right out of college, closer to retirement). That is why taxes are so high.

Also, state employees can 'bank' sick time for their length of employment and collect it all at retirement.

I was reading an article how it isn't unheard of for state employees to retire with a $100,000 check for banked sick time. There are also plenty of cases of people retiring with over $500,000 in banked sick time.

Leah- Yes, I know and this thread did provide me with much well needed information. And to be honest, it has left a slightly bad taste in my mouth. But I will get over it. NJ is as I put it "out of control". That's why I am looking for a place that has a decent cost of living. NJ has every tax you can imagine. Not to mention every ridiculous law imaginable. As a fact, it is ranked #1 in the highest property taxes. It is getting too crowded for my liking, so with all this said, it is time to go and find our little piece of heaven somewhere. Thank you again for all of your informative posts.

I will get back to Fodors if I have any more ?'s.

Regards,

Carol Ann

Being right on the border of NC and SC, I can tell you that a lot of folks my parents age who are lucky enough to need to worry about such things are moving out of NC for the lower SC tax rates (highest income bracket in NC is 8.25%, in SC it's 7.0%).

The only place the North v. South debate continues to rage, is in the South. Those of us from 'up North' generally have little idea that the "War" is still going strong south of the Mason-Dixon line. I'll reserve my un-PC like comments regarding Southern generalizations as that is a dangerous path to tread. I would like to think that we Yankees have added some diversity & growth that otherwise may not have happened. I, personally, view that as an improvement in the quality of life, & I feel sorry for those who don't welcome such change.
