'No Destination' Vacation

We are contemplating not making advance vacation plans and 'winging it'. Has anyone taken a last minute vacation? We live on the east coast and there are many destinations we have never seen. Last minute airfares seems very inexpensive and we would like to take advantage. Would be interested hearing from anyone who has traveled 'at the last minute' with success. It is just my husband and I.

Absolutely. Go for it. We've done it a few times and haven't been disappointed. Many of the airlines have irresistable last minute flight deals on their web sites. It's worth checking after you've impulsed, though, that you're not turning up in New Orleans at Mardi Gras without a hotel or car reservation.

We've also literally thrown a dart at the map (a state map, not a world map) and driven there. So-so results, made me work on my darts game.

I agree, go for it. My husband and I did this on our honeymoon (of all times)a few years ago and had a great, memorable time. Our airfare from Nashville to Phoenix for $98 one way and we got a rental car. Neither one of us had been that far West before then. We saw everything from Phoenix, Grand Canyon, Utah, Vegas, LA, San Diego and so on as the roads led us. We just found places to stay and things to do as we went. We went in July-Aug. and it was GREAT!!! Good luck and have a good time.

John/Janet,

Thanks for your endorsement!
Of course, the last week in August will prove challenging.

Well, maybe not-- it's hurricane season and if you are going such short notice, you can pretty well avoid brewing storms, while Florida and the Caribbean have lots of cheap, last minute deals even at some of the classiest properties!

Am looking for sources for inexpensive, last minute airline tickets on the internet and websites. Can someone point me in the right direction?
We would fly out of Phila. and receive USAir 'ESaver' emails...any other airlines we should consider?
Note to Diana -
Thanks for you reply. We would never consider FL nor Caribbean in August.

Two yrs. ago, we used f/f miles to fly to Seattle...the week prior to departure there was a great offer from USAir. Any/all websites for 'last minute travel', either air fares, hotels or even tours would be appreciated.
Thank you.

United has an e-fare email list that they email you a few days before you'd need to travel. Check out their website to sign up: www.ual.com

American also has a Fare Saver list. It comes out on Wednesday for travel that weekend. Look at www.aa.com for details.

You can subscribe to all the airline "deals" (I do!) but you can also bookmark this page from WebFlyer, which updates them ALL on one site each Wednesday afternoon!
