We are staying in San Francisco for one day after a conference. We would then like to travel north to explore and relax in the Napa region. We've heard that Healdsburg is a lovely little town to stay in. Any suggestions for hotels or Inns? I would love to hear any other fun places to see and things to do that you may know about.

What is your budget for accomodations? What sort of place are you looking for? Lots of places out there, price usually becomes a significant issue.

Personally, I like Auberge du Soleil.

I like clean and comfortable places. charming isn't bad either, but I like mid priced destinations.

I would push for Healdsburg. The area is fantastic, tons of quality wineries but also more spread out and not as busy as Napa. Plus if you really want to do Napa, its only 25 min or so to the northern end of Napa (Calistoga).

As far as specifics, I'm not certain what "mid-priced" is for you. The Grape Leaf Inn in Healdsburg was a fantastic experience (I think rooms are around $250-450 or so a night which includes breakfast and an early evening wine tasting). Plus its an easy walk to the square and all of the restaurants. http://www.grapeleafinn.com/

On the much cheaper side there is the Dry Creek Inn. Nothing to say for it other than it is relatively cheap and if you stay in the new part (the "Tuscan" rooms) they are nice and clean.

We have also stayed at the Calderwood Inn in Healdsburg (another B&B). A very good experience as well but not, in our opinion, quite as good as the Grape Leaf but I would recommend it (I believe it may be slightly less expensive).

I like to stay in town and my favorite town in the area is Sonoma. Relatively small and walkable, good shops and restaurants. I travel on a budget, no spas for me, but I've stayed at the El Pueblo Inn and liked it very much. It's not far from the center of town and on the road that goes west and north to lots of wineries.

We like the Victorian Garden Inn in Sonoma. It's small, though, so it may already be booked. You can walk into town.

I have stayed at Hotel Headsburg several times and I really like the place. The location on the square is great for strolling after dinner without getting in a car. The rooms are updated nicely and the restaurant (Dry Creek Kitchen-a Charlie Palmer Restaurant) is excellent..and somewhat pricey! If you don't mind a little drive (10-15 minutes) you can stay at the Vintners Inn, in northern Santa Rosa. Vintners Inn is a great spot that has another great restaurant (John Ash) and you will not be disappointed. My preference is Healdsburg for good shops, restaurants and proximity to wine country.

If you only plan to be there one night, be aware than most places will have a two night minimum, so that restricts your options even further.
