Niagara Falls - Accomodations off the beaten path?

Hi:
My husband and I would like to visit the Falls but would like to stay outside the area - preferably in Canada in an area quiet, woodsy, with some hiking, etc. Any recommendations? Perhaps between Toronto or the Falls.
Thanks for your help!

Niagara-on-the-Lake is about an hour from the falls, and has some really comfortable B&Bs, as well as a theater festival. I enjoyed staying there for a few days. I hiked along the Niagara River, as well as taking a jet boat ride up the rapids. There's a long parkway between NOTL and Niagara Falls that's great for walking and biking.

I second Niagra on the Lake. Check the Pillar and Post Inn. You won't be disappointed.

Not exactly sure of the distance, but I believe that Niagara on the Lake is about 20 minutes from Niagara Falls, not an hour as previous poster estimates, and a great alternative to staying in the Falls. It's a picturesque town, with great restaurants and wineries, beautiful hotels, shopping and the bike/hiking trail should suit your needs.

Another vote for Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Pillar and Post is one of the premier lodgings, and you will love it. If it's price range is a bit too high for you there are many other inns and B&Bs to choose from. If you do a search on the Canadian web site, you'll find tons of info. We like the Oban Inn (an "inn" rather than traditional B&B), and The Cranberry House (a traditional B&B). However, my favorite is the Pillar and Post. The Queen's Landing and Prince of Wales are also great inns to stay inn, but these will be a bit pricey.
