Newport RI Trip Report
Just back from 4 nights in Newport, RI. Highlights are:
Where we stayed: Francis Malbone House. Overall a wonderful experience. Stayed in room C8, in the new section, called Newport, room 8. Wonderful king size bed, plenty of space overall. Breakfast and afternoon treats were amazing, each day was better then the day before. Very fresh and a wonderful selection. All hotel staff were great. Will, Anne Marie and Darryl went out of their way to make us feel like we were their only guests.
Where we ate:
White Horse Tavern, worth every penny. Great food and service.
22 Bowens: a bad choice. Anne Marie tried to steer us away from there due to previous guests bad comments, we went anyway. We should have listened. Both of our meals were below par, service was so bad I wrote a comment card on the horrible waiter. The table next to us got up and left in the middle of their dinner due to their dissatisfaction with the food and the same waiter we had. Stay away, there are too many other places to go.
The West Deck: Service and food were outstanding.
Café Zelda: Service and food were outstanding.
What we did:
Four Mansions in this order: The Elms, Marble House, Rosecliff, Breakers. You can skip Rosecliff, and definitely do the Breakers last. One day of tennis at the Newport Casino, and the Tennis Hall of Fame. A men’s professional tournament was being played at this time and this was one of the reasons for the timing of the trip. Two thirds of the Cliff Walk, beautiful views and good exercise as well.
Overall a very nice trip.

LisaB: Thank you for posting your report! It's been years since we have been to Newport and we also loved the Cliff Walk.
I checked out the website for Francis Malbone House -- I can see why you were pleased with your stay. I have bookmarked it for future reference. Thanks!

We just returned from our first-ever visit to Newport and absolutely loved it.
We're pretty well traveled and can't figure out how we managed to reach age 50-plus without ever seeing this area.
Did a lot of sailing and visited several mansions. Cliff walk was great, esp. at dusk after a very hot day.
Didn't do the fancy restaurant routine, but enjoyed fried clams and cold beer at Flo's (our kind of place), Mexican food and margaritas at Loca, and MORE fried clams at Anthony's in Middletown.
Stayed at the Howard Johnson Motel - it's in Middletown, but only about two miles from downtown Newport. Nothing special, but the room was in good shape, indoor pool, attached Applebee's, price good for Newport area in July.
Biggest negative was that it appears Newport is unpleasantly crowded on summer weekends. We arrived on Sun. afternoon and left Fri. evening, so we just caught the beginning and end of the crowds. If we go back, it will be mid-week.
Parking in town also can be expensive.
We loved the fact that there is a lot of park land and open space south of the city of Newport.

If anyone wants to bring a piece of Newport home don't leave out a visit to Only in Rhode Island - located right on the wharf. They have everything that is local only to Rhode Island - Del's Lemonade, etc... great little store

Thanks for both nice reports. They bring back many great memories.
cdt, how was the Mexican food at Loca? I ask because my Mom lives near Newport and is alway complaining about the lack of decent Mexican food. The first place we stop when she gets off the plane here in Southern Cal. is El Burrito Jr. or El Tarasco.

To lvk:
The food at Loca was very good, but not fantastic (we're spoiled - lived in Colorado for many years). We liked the fact that they had some "different" choices, including several dishes made with seafood, and a veggie chimi. Nice selection of margaritas.
There was another Mexican place in Middletown, just past (NE of) HoJo's - didn't get to eat there. Also heard there was a cheap but good burrito place in Newport but can't recall the name.
