Newport RI in July

I'm looking for a good b&b or inn to stay during my July7-July 11 summer vacation in Newport, Rhode Island. I'd like on the water with a balcony if possible. Please let me know of places with good service, etc. Also, can I do without a car?

Click on Rhode Island in the topic search box above this message, then click "find." Look at a question labeled, "Newport, RI - lodging help."

I was in Newport last month for a few days and managed OK without a car. The town is very 'walkable'. There are bus tours run from the tourist centre ( next to the Marriott), which take you round the area and include tickets to some of the famous summer homes, also the commentary by the bus driver was very informative. There is a local train which will be running in July, it goes to Portsmouth and makes a stop at the Topiary Gardens. While in Newport be sure to walk the coastal path, lovely views of the coastline plus some of the summer mansions.

Check out a wonderful inn called Elm Tree Cottage. In the Historic Newport just a short stroll to the harbor and the clift walk. Their web site iswww.elm-tree.com.

Try the Castle Hill Inn. It's right on the water, gorgeous views and terrific service and food. It may be very expensive however.

Avoid staying downtown if you can (very noisy nightlife until 3-4 am, unless you plan to be part of that!). A great alternative is the "Point" section that has several bed and B's and is within walking distane of downtown, very close to transportation center, etc.
