Newport RI

I will be in Newport RI on business the last two weeks of September. I hear it's one of the prettiest places in America - can anyone give me suggestions for restaurants and relaxation? Thanks!

I too am looking into going to Newport, RI. Where should I stay, not too expensive. Thanks.

Try Asterix and Obelix on Thames. Not waterfront but excellent food and atmosphere. Trendy but not silly.

Tour the mansions, walk the Cliff Walk.

Salas' on Thames. Great atmosphere, great food. Kind of a dump...

I agree with the Salas (upstairs) dining room. No gourmet food here, just excellent value. They have been in business since at least the mid 70's, so they must be doing something right. This is a good place to have your token NE lobster dinner- unlike some of the other restaurants in Newport it won't be overpriced. The Red Parrot (right across the street from Salas) as of a few years ago had a nice little Sunday night Jazz thing going on. The White Horse Tavern is pretty much a must. For more relaxation, you might try one of the evening sailing schooner bay tours (there are several that are comparable to each other).

Someone posted this website in a recent note. http://www.livewave.com/ When you get there, click on "Narragansett Bay". This is a web cam of Newport's harbor and is such fun to watch. I've seen a couple of twelve meters come in and raft up, a cruise ship leave, and generally great sailing shots. Makes me want to head right on up there.

It runs 24 hrs but obviously night is pretty much a waste. You can control the cam yourself but you really need a high speed connection to it well.

Whoever posted the site before, thanks so much! Both my dh and I have it bookmarked...him at work, me at home...its a great diversion, even if it does make me sick looking at the sailing up there!!
