Augusta is about 240 miles from NYC. There is no train service to Augusta and I doubt there is bus service.
The nearest town of any size is Utica, about 20 miles away. There is probably Amtrak service to Utica; there is bus service. I can't help on how you would get to Augusta from Utica.

There is no rail in August. The nearest rail is Dover.
Bus service runs from Port Authority to Newton (lakelandbus.com).
The Sussex County Farm and Horse Show (recently bought the State Fair license to use "State Fair") may provide you with a better and closer solution.

oops, meant to say no rail service to Augusta- not August!.
NJ is in dark ages when it comes to public transportation, unless you live on/near a route to NYC.
Why are you coming to the fair?
Also, the New Jersey CArdinals minor league baseball stadium is adjacent (~miles) to the fairgrounds. There may be seasonal service to the games.
