If price is no object I would choose Le Bernadin for seafood and Il Mulino for Italian. Ask a New Yorker what their favorite steakhouse is and you will get so many varied answers second only to what is their favorite pizza place. Probably more people like Peter Lugers in Williamsburg than the many other good steakhouses.

Steak:

Try old New York, The Palm West, opened in 1926 and located at 250 W 50th street, btwn Broadway and 8th ave.

Pricey tab still among the best steak houses in NYC.

Italian:

Roberto's (bronx)
632 E 186th street (belmont ave)
expensive

You've gotten some excellent suggestions, but they are very expensive. How about some info on how much you want to spend?

Check Zagats.com, you can search by location, type of food, etc. It has very good information.
