It really is kind of funny, that we rent apartments in cities all over Europe and have never had a fraction of the difficulty as we're having in New York. Partly it's because it's for a month, but probably more because I'm just fairly picky. I can look at a Paris apartment website of 50 apartments and easily pick out a dozen I'd love to stay in. Not so with the New York site -- unless we're looking at REALLY expensive places.

I know what you mean, I have the same problems here in NY. Alas, I don't have deep pockets, nor do I have the good luck many people have searching on craigslist.
Wishing you the best of luck in your search. I actually lived in the Worldwide Plaza for a time, and loved living in that area.

My friend lived there when she first moved to Manhattan and I LOVED the location. It was a great base of operations for visits to the city - but after a couple of years of living there the tourists did get on her nerves. (Moved to UWS)

I am indeed. I went with her for the actual move-in week and had the task of helping to convert a country dog to a city dog while friend was at work. Poor dog DESPERATELY searched for any hint of dirt on the short walks that weren't park walks. One day, in desperation, she leapt into one of the big planters surrounding the courtyard area (outside movies/ restaurants. The doormen rushed to us yelling "No! No!". I was so embarrassed. On those short walks she would squeeze up to the fencing surrounding a razed lot on the corner. There was more crumbled bricks and broken glass than dirt in the mix - but it was the closest thing that smelled like dirt that she could find.
Fast forward a year - she was peeing and pooping on the sidewalk with ease. Country dog successful made the transition to city dog.
She lived on the 35th floor, I believe. When I read your apartment reviews earlier, I remembered that view. Nice way to start out in NYC. I found the deliveries to be amazing. We shopped like mad that first week to get the apartment ready before I left. I'd never experienced that kind of delivery service before. The Oriental rugs we bought beat us back to the apartment. Nice.

OK, here's the latest -- and apparently the final.
After a couple of mistarts, mclaurie met with the woman and viewed the 73rd and Columbus apartment yesterday. The woman kept her waiting over an hour.
Great neighborhood, nice street (but unusually filled with trash, she mentioned), and generally nice building. But it's an odd one. Enter, go up two flights, then enter a little vestibule that has the bathroom (just big enough for one person to stand and turn in) and the tiny kitchen which would fit our limited cooking needs. Then you go up a few steps to the living and bedroom. The living room was fine, although furnishings were a bit dodgy -- there was a really nice window with some stained glass and one wall was brick. The bedroom had a double (not queen bed on a platform frame, no box spring) and just enough room to squeeze around. The woman said they could put in a queen -- but if so, how could you get around it at all? There was also a loft sort of thing which had a mattress for maybe a kid to crash on. There was one small AC window unit in the living room -- none in the bedroom. Mclaurie questioned how much it would cool down the whole apartment mainly which had very high ceilings. So we've decided this is a no go.
Meanwhile I've been holding off the owner of the apartment with fantastic views from the 30something floor. I called today and we are taking it. Nice, modern, good amenities in a nice doorman building at the corner of 8th and 50th. So we'll be back to the familiar. I'm happy.
Meanwhile with Lee's Alzheimer's I've also had the thought that there is a certain security of being in a doorman building rather than a simple townhouse. Not that he's in the habit of wandering off, but you never know.

NeoPatrick, I am glad you have found something that will be a good match - I have been away and was part way through this thinking my daughter could look for you when there was Mclaurie to the rescue!
I am sure with your many visits to the city you have likely attended or heard of the 92nd St Y, but in the off chance you have not, and since you are going to be in the city for a month, you might want to check out their events while you are in the city - sometimes they have fabulous concerts, lectures, literary readings, film, theater presentations, talks/reviews- and things like the critics and/or biographers brunch- the programs I've attended have been wonderful and certainly a reasonable price - looking quickly I don't see any yet scheduled critic/biographer brunches for your time frame, but they are always popping up and it looks like Ian McEwan and Bruce Dern are both speaking the month you are in the city - it's www.92y.org if you want to see what it has to offer during your stay.
I do find tix to interesting programs go quickly.

Thanks for the tip. Hmm. Steve Ross and three female singers are doing a fun show Noel Coward and his Ladies -- at $60 a ticket. I'm a Noel Coward fanatic -- and I know one of the singers -- indirectly.

Hi Patrick,
So glad mclaurie was able to finally see the apartment and help you along on that decision.
I think even if you're not going to the theater that much, it's still a nice area for a stay. The doorman would also be helpful in your particular situation.
Let me know if you're interested in some museums. I'll see where I can help out.

The Neue Gallery is high on the list (thanks to Bugswife).
And I keep putting off a trip to the Morgan Library which I think opened some new rooms a year or so ago (also supposedly a great lunch place).
And regarding the area -- yea, I'm very happy. One block to Roberto Passon, 1/2 block to a new favorite, Tout va Bien and also Maria Pia. And all my favorites along 9th Avenue. So many places, so little time.

Well that was a workout Patrick but I am so glad that you found an apartment that will work well for you and Lee. And how very nice of mcclaurie to check out the other apartment for you. Fodorites are amazing! I certainly wish you two a beautiful month in NYC.

So glad that Mclaurie was able to check out the apartment, you can now stay at the other without wondering "what if". The view will be amazing as you know, and the doorman is a nice extra safety feature for you.
I have not been to the Morgan since the renovation, but lunch was indeed wonderful, I hope you'll be able to go while you are there. Have a wonderful trip and I'm looking forward to hearing all about it.

NeoPatrick - Glad you have your apartment sorted. It does sound like the one you have gone with is perfect for you and Lee.
Will look forward to hearing all about your month stay. Hope to do that some time in the future.

mclaurie is a gem. We have talked only by email and phone a couple times. The past two stays in New York we had plans to get together, but in both cases something came up. Next time for sure. And she went out of the way to check this apartment out for us.
I'm also looking forward to the NYC GTG on June 2 --even if it is across the Hudson.

so glad to hear that this saga has a happy ending & kudos to mclaurie for
her helpfulness.
Do check out the "new" Morgan & have
lunch there, too.
It's a way too-short 7-min ferry ride for you & Lee across to Weehawken on 6-2. Let Trish know as she's our pick-up gal.
