Read this string yesterday (I LOVED it James) and was ashamed to realize my experience in the Bronx is limited to going to Loehmann's (in the dark ages), City Island (which I love) and getting lost on my way to somewhere else.

Happened to come across these listings this morning on nycvisit.com for anyone going to the Bronx

phone (718) 881-8900 |
Poe's home from 1846 to 1849, where many of his famous works were written. Admission. Closed Mon., Tues.

Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum
895 Shore Road | Bronx, NY 10464

Greek Revival-style country residence of NYC businessman Robert Bartow and family. Built in 1840. Adults $2.50, seniors/students $1.25, kids free. Open Sat., Sun., Wed.

This is an old thread, but I really enjoyed it. I've lived in Washington Heights, Ditmas Park, the western end of Soho (we called it HTV - Holland Tunnel Vicinity) and now "up the hill" in Washington Heights near the Cloisters/190th Street. I'm thrilled to see someone outside of the city taking an interest in my odd little 'hoods and you are even more generous and open-minded than I, what you call vibrant I might call "loud and dirty" and what you call peaceful I might call "desolate and boring" but they all warrant exploration. Vinegar Hill is another favorite "find."

I think that no one in NY visits the typical "tourist spots" not because they are bad or uninteresting, but because we assume they will always be there. One of my favorite NY activities is to take the train to a random neighborhood and explore. Recent visits have included Riverdale and Roosevelt Island, which is a trip to say the least.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your report, I'm off to search for more of your posts to see where else you've been!

I enjoyed reading this again, glad someone "revived" it. Are you still around, James?

Wonderful trip report. I am definitely going to print this entire thread and carry it with me on my next trip to NYC. I found your report by doing a search on Brooklyn and I am so glad I did. My husband and I enjoy our mini weekends in NYC, and were just talking about venturing outside of the "touristy zone" and visit other boroughs. Brooklyn is at the top of my list. Actually my girlfriend and I will be NYC the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so thats an idea, or I may save Brooklyn when my husband and I return. Thanks again.
