My husbanc and I will be visiting NYC in March 2001, Can anyone tell me what the weather is like at that time of year?
Also I am wondering if Coney Island is worth visiting? Right now our only plans are to see The Lion King. Any suggestions?

March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb (sometimes!!)..We have been known to have 60-70 degree days followed by 30's and snow.
Coney Island the amusement park? It is open all year but might be a bit chilly. A bit off the beaten track from Manhattan though you can get there by subway. www.coneyisland.com

The Natural History museum? Seeing the New York Stock Exchange? Lower Manhattan, which has historical associations with the Colonial era? Statue of Liberty? Ellis Island? Views from the top of tall buildings?
Shopping? Fine dining? And if shopping or dining, what is your budget? And did you mention Coney Island for a particular reason, or just that you've heard of it?

Thanks Annie for the quick reply. We will be in NYC March 22-25. I was just in NYC last week for a QUICK overnight business trip and I am dying to get back there for vacation. I have been twice and my husband has never been. I already have my Lion King tickets and still trying to figure out what else to do. I thought Coney Island would be great to do for some childish fun. We will be celebrating my 30th bday and our 10 anniversary. I would also like a recommendation on a nice quite romantic place to dine either before or after the theatre. I do want to visit the Statue of Liberty and don't think I want to wait in line to get to the top of the Empire State Building. We would like to see a play each night we are there but I think we will just go to TKTS a few hours before. Any suggestions on anything to do are welcome. Thanks!

Natural History Museum sounds like a place we would like to visit. I am not into the art museums (been to Museum of Modern Art), it's just not for me. I guess what I am looking for is daytime activities and places to eat. I would be content to walk up and down Broadway all day long but I have to keep my husband in mind also...lol! Shopping would be good but I am not one to spend mega buck on shopping. What about the different areas of town?...Chinatown, The Village?????Is the anything worth venturing into the other burroughs for? Just something funa dn exciting for two small town people from the south.

Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry (it's free) to see Lady Liberty. You don't have to get off in Staten Island, just stay on the boat and take the return trip. When you get back to NYC go to the World Trade Center annd go to the top. I like that view much better! Take a walk over to the South Street Seaport. Battery Park has a wonderful WWII memorial. Fraunces Tavern is a Revolutionary War era restaurant, George Washington gave a famous speech there (forgive me I can't remember which one) Lower Manhattan is a great place to walk around. Kind of quiet during the weekend. If you decide to go to Coney Island, go early in the day. Get there when it opens, have lunch at Nathan's and be heading back to NYC before 3pm or you'll be in rush hour subway traffic. There are a few place you should stop to get information. NYC's Official Visitor Center is located at 7th Avenue and 53rd Street. Maps, brochures and discount tickets. You can get Metrocards there for your subway and bus rides. There is another Visitor Center in Times Square.

How about a trip to the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Gardens? Two good places to stroll around. Have lunch in Little Italy of the Bronx--Arthur Avenue. Easy to reach by subway and bus.

If you go to Coney Island, the Aquarium is adjacent and worth the visit.

World Trade Center. You can eat at the top of Windows On The World (windowsontheworld.com) for the dinner; visit the observation deck (on the other twin tower) instead of the Empire State Building, then take the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Or, you could take the ferry to the Statue in the morning, then WTC Observation deck, then dinner. If you do eat at WOW, make reservations 1hr before sunset (check sunrisesunset.com for exact times) so you can see the city at day then at night.

Also, there is a TKTS in the WTC too. They sell matinee tickets the day before, so with some timing, you could also get another show in.

I visited Coney Island about 4 years ago. I was very disappointed. I knew it wasn't going to be like Disney World. In fact, I was hopping fro something similar to Six Flags. In my opinion, Coney Island is a run down amusement park that has a flee market. I wasn't impressed and would only recommended it to my worst enemy.

Thanks for the advice on Coney Island. I was expecting it to be sorta of a six flags kinda place too. Maybe we will have to rethinkConey Island.
GOL...any idea on price at the Windows? I looked it up and it looks absolutely wonderful but I don't want to stroke out when I get the bill...lol. But I would love to see the city from that view.

Bridget - Definitely skip Coney Island. It has long passed its heyday, and is now an inner city neighborhood of public housing and vacant lots, with very limited amusements on the Boardwalk - especially at that time of year. It is a long subway ride from Manhattan. While the Cyclone roller coaster is great, there is not much else there, and not worth the long trip when you have limited time in NY.

Also, forgot to suggest drinks at Windows. Bar has the views, without the cost of a meal. (In my opinion, restaurant is not worth the money. There are much better restaurants in that price range.)

The City Pass offers 6 different attractions for $30-$35. A good buy if you're going to 4 or more of those attractions.

I will check out city pass for sure...i love bargins. We will be staying at the Quality Inn on W 46th street...any opinions on this hotel?

A drink at the top of the WTC sounds great....i had a cosmopolitian the last time I was in NYC and fell in love with that drink so maybe I can have a fantastic drink with a fantastic view.
