New York City Upper Westside Hotel
I haven't seen a post in some time that addresses this specific question. For upper west side hotels, which is better...the Beacon or the Lucerne? Any opinions out there?

I live on the upper west side... and haven't actually stayed in either of these hotels... but I'd recommend a fairly new hotel called "On the Avenue" It's on West 77th Street and Broadway and looks really nice. A friend from out of town stayed there and was pleased. Here is the website:

I haven't stayed at the Lucerne, but I loved the Beacon when I stayed there a couple of years ago. The location is perfect. I walked past there a few days ago and my friends commented that some renovations have been done recently.

I believe the Beacon and the Milburn which you haven't mentioned both have kitchenettes in their rooms and are more apt/hotels. On the Avenue is not that new (over a year) and I became concerned when they were removed from tripadvisor. Glad to hear jennymary's friend liked it. I did stay at the Lucerne at one point. It's got lots of marble (lobby, bathrooms), well furnished rooms. A very nice rest. attached called Nice Matin. The only downside is some of the rooms are quite small. If you ask for corner rooms, those seem to be the largest.

THe Excelsior (81st St. between Columbus Ave. and CPW) remains one of our favorite places for location and accommodations. Many say the Lucerne Lucerne (79th and Amsterdam) is even better, but I'd prefer to be as close to Central Park and the subway as the Excelsior is -- very quiet, too, being right opposite the museum/planetarium.

cfc makes a good point about adding the Excelsior. A recent post on another thread about the Milburn...

Message: just returned from a 3 night stay at the Milburn Hotel with my husband and 3 children. We absolutely loved it. Obviously - a different sort of trip than you are planning but I would go back here even if I was with friends. We loved the location, ate a great dinner at Nikos on the corner and a great breakfast at the Manhattan Diner across the street. We had a one bedroom suite, plenty of room, nice staff, etc. We spent one day in the Times Square area and I think we were all glad to return to the relative peace and sanity of 76th street!

Message: I grew up on the UWS and always stay at my parents apt, except last thanksgiving when they were doing extensive renovations. So, we stayed at the Milburn, my first time in a hotel in NYC ever. But, the Milburn was fine, nice staff, good location, close to subway and Zabars. The Lucerne was booked when we made the reservations, also recommended by those that live in the neighborhood.
