New York City sights for our fifth trip Dec 6-11
(Please forgive this Fodors MB newbie....I posted a similar message on another forum with NYC in the title, but needed to spell out New York City in order to be included in this thread...thanks!)...This will be our fifth trip to NYC during the holiday season (five days) and I am looking for some insider recommendations for neighborhoods/sights that we have not really explored yet. We are mid 50’s, very familiar with Midtown and the UWS, but still need to experience Soho, Greenwich Village, East Village, and anywhere else that you recommend (I always feel like I am wandering aimlessly in these areas, and I know you can help steer me in the best direction). We have done all the touristy stuff, and love the subway. Any recommendations for great neighborhoods (including their metro stops), restaurants(we eat everything…midrange $$$), museums shopping, etc.? Also, is the NY Botanical Garden worth the trip via Metro North train?

NY Botantical Garden is worth the trip, The Christmas exhibitions are fabulous. If you are into Trains there is a Christmas train exhibit which is VG and this year will be open at nite. Metro North stops right at the gate. I am not sure of the Metro north evening schedules but the trains do run until midnight. http://www.nybg.org/whats_on_now/whatsonnow.php
The Bronx Zoo also has a holiday lights exhibit which is geared for kids, but it is also quite good. http://bronxzoo.com/bz-whatshappening/holiday_lights
NY's real Little Italy is Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, where the Bronx Zoo is located. There are lots of fabulous and inexpensive restaurants there. The neighborhood is safe. You could walk from the zoo and get a cab back to the Fordham Metro North station http://www.thereallittleitaly.com/

The Foods of NY tours are a great way to explore the downtown areas. I did the Greenwich Village one a couple years ago and really enjoyed it.

If you're around in the daytime, hit SoHo for shopping; Woo Lae Oak is Korean BBQ and is fun for lunch..later on you can try Terra Blues for jazz music and most any local Italian restaurant would suffice for dinner.
If you like wine, be sure to drop into 'inoteca in the East Village..the list, paninis and great service are worth the trip over. Enjoy!
