Am going with my mother in law and sister in law to NYC on 1/22-1/24. Have hotel and plays set up. Need restaurants for both nights. We want good and worth the money. Seafood, tex-mex, american....We are staying in Time Square. Any suggestions?

For seafood, "solid" bang for the buck fare is The Blue Water Grill.

As far as Tex-Mex, i don't think you'll find it in NYC, as we are notoriously lacking in this category. If you must, Rosa Mexicana seems to be the crowd favorite. I think the best Tex-Mex i've ever had is in nearby (10 minute bus ride from Port Authority) Hoboken, NJ. I've take a friend of mine from the Southwest there and he said, "It's not like home, but it's the best i've had in the tri-state area."

If you consider this trip to NJ an actual option, let me know and i'll post more details.

Go for the prix fix wine tasting menu at Cite (available after 8pm), 120 W. 51st St. (bet. 6th & 7th Aves.). It's great, especially if you like a little wine with your dinner.

I've always enjoyed Foley's Fishmarket in the Marriott Renaissance Hotel which overlooks the northern end of Times Square. It has a nice view of Times Square from about the third floor.

Another good one in the theater district, Judson Grill, 152 W. 52nd St. (bet. 6th & 7th Aves.). Wherever you should choose, make a reservation. For less expensive meals, there are some Brazilian restarants in the area that are decent, Cabana Carioca, 123 W. 45th St. (bet. 6th & 7th Aves.) and Via Brazil, 34 W. 46th St. (bet. 5th & 6th Aves. Via Brazil is a little nicer then Cabana. I have eaten in all these places. You can also check Zagat.com for more info.

If you're still a Seinfeld fan, be sure to stop by the International Soup Kitchen (soup nazi) perhaps for lunch. Soup is wonderful. Only drawback is that there are no tables. We talked our way into a local bar with our promise to "drink lots".

Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay's MESA GRILL offers tremendoes southwestern cuisine in the Union Square area. For the best Mexican food in NYC, try MEXICAN RADIO.

In Times Square, RUBY FOO'S is a good choice for well above average Pan-Asian cuisine.

The Baja in Hoboken, NJ

Don't bother to read the menu, there's only one thing to order:
"The Baja Special" (and ask for all the shrimp grilled).

A HUGE family style platter of marinated steak (quality stuff!!), grilled chicken piled high, surrounded by HUMONGOUS shrimp. Refried beans, rice, and tortillas served on the side.

(if there's 4 or more people, you can order it for one less than is in your party, and there will still be enough food)

The chips and salsa are great too, and they have over 100 tequilas behind the bar.

One caveat: every now and then the service gets "spotty" and the food doesn't come out of the kitchen as hot as it should!

I've nothing against Hoboken or the restaurant recommended, but I can't believe you'd come to New York and its 10,000 restaurants and think of going to Hoboken to eat!

Ha! Howard, you are most likely right, but I live in NYC and got sidetracked by the idea of good TexMex anywhere!

Some good recommendations here but many not in the theater district (Mesa Grill and Blue Water both in Union Sq area, 14th - 17th st). If you are looking for something pre-bway theater, it's probably best to stick to the midtown area. You can try the Union Sq recommendations for lunch if you can't do dinner there. Union Sq area is filled with good restaurants and they are less crowded and less expensive for lunch.

I can recommend Santa Fe, a restaurant in the Lincoln Center area with an excellent Southwestern menu.

Although i think this place in Hoboken is better than any Tex-Mex i've had in NYC, i do understand the hesitancy of being in NYC and going to NJ to eat. This is why i only mentioned it in my first post and mentioned that i'd only add to it if they considered it a viable option (and somebody else asked me for more details, which i added). (please don't read the above as an attack, as it's not, as i agree with you that MOST people would NOT be interested in traveling to NJ from NYC for a meal... although Hoboken may be quicker to get to than some other places that are actually in NYC) Sometimes the "tone" of a post can be misinterpretted when reading.

C - i've been to Maxwell's quite a few times, although, unfortunately, it's no longer the great music club it once was (although still a decent place to see a band)
