I can't speak for the hotel, but the area is the trendy upper westside. You are in walking distance of Lincoln Center, Museum of Natural History, Central Park, and Zabar's. Lot's of restaurants, and a short crosstown bus ride to the Metropolitan Museum. Having said that, the neighborhood is considered a residential area and a bit far afield from the general tourist areas located both downtown and midtown.

I stayed at the Beacon last year and would stay there again. As others have said, it's a lively area and feels safe. Personally, I prefer the atmosphere of the Upper West Side to the Theatre District or other places more in the heart of the tourist areas.
I think all rooms and suites have a kitchenette at the Beacon and it's directly across the street from a block of food stores -- Fairways Market, known for produce and lots more; D'Agostino's grocery store; and Citarella especially for seafood -- as well as within walking distance of the famous deli Zabar's and other good places, so if you're economy-minded you won't have to eat all of your meals at restaurants. Plus, you get to feel a little bit like you're actually a resident in your little apartment.
Our room was perfectly acceptable. Not beautiful or luxurious, but since I'm usually a real budget traveller it actually seemed pretty luxurious to me. (Well, it had a nice bathroom and good towels!) Since the hotel is a conversion from an apartment building (some apartments are still occupied by long-term residents; as residents move out, their aparments are converted) some rooms have been renovated more recently than others, so I don't know if our room was typical.
As others have said, public transport is very convenient there.
