New Orleans - VERY UNSAFE!!

Just got back from N.O. stayed at the Days Inn Canal Street. Very dangerous area we where happy we had a car. hotel dirty staff rude. Bourban street - totally crazy - R rated Disney land for adults - intriguing and fun though, we went there every night. --to be continued--

Colleen, Sorry your trip here was less than perfect. If you had checked this forum prior to traveling, you would have known that your hotel was in a LOUSY location. As for Bourbon Street, I don't know why people expect it to be a nice place - it's full of drunken tourists who seem to enjoy hanging out in cheap bars. Our city does have a lot of wonderful things to offer, but the average tourist who looks no farther than Bourbon Street and the Days Inn on Canal will never find them.

Your heading is very misleading!! What you should've said is that the Days Inn on Canal Street is an awful place to stay! And I agree with Meg...I've never seen anyone on this forum OR on the AOL Louisiana chat board who has ever implied that that Days Inn was anything more than terrible. You should've checked BEFORE you went. As far as safety in New Orleans goes, I think the French Quarter is probably one of the safest places in the country if you exercise common sense.

Colleen, you picked a crappy hotel. There are dozens of nice hotels, B&Bs and inns in safe areas. Sorry you didn't like the hotel...better luck next time! As for your heading, it's very misleading...crime is down in New Orleans...way down! N.O. is now not even in the violent crime Top 20.

Just wanted to say that we have visited New Orleans three times and have loved each stay. The history and feel of the city is just great. We always stay in the French Quarter so we can get around on foot, but we have always checked what areas to watch out for - just like we would any other new city we visit. If Colleen ever goes back, she might also try taking day trips out of the city to the surrounding area - the plantations and historical sites were great.

Hi again!
I apologize, I should have specified the hotel! I actually had read the forum but I didn't think it would be as bad at that hotel as it was. Overall we had a great time (again I apologize for my header looking at it now, i can see it was misleading)
We loved the Garden District (saw Anne Rice's house), the French market area (had a wonderful lunch at an outdoor cafe with a live jazz band) and drove down to Grand Isle and saw dolphins following the shrimp boats ( a magical experience).

Hi Colleen
Again, sorry your hotel wasn't up to par. The Days Inn and "Crescent on Canal" (formerly Ramada on Canal) are two of the worst hotels anywhere, in my estimation. Dirty facilities and poor locations RIGHT next to Interstate 10! Next time you're headed down to New Orleans let us know and all the good folks on this board will make some suggestions for GREAT accommodations!

Well everyone picks the Days Inn because it's cheap. When ever you see a hotel anywhere that is alo tcheaper than others you have to wonder ..WHY? That area isn't the best. Too close to I-10 also. I think I feel safer in the quarter than most FL cities I have visited INCLUDING Disney and Orlando. My friends wife got mugged there and almost killed.
