New Orleans Mardi Gras accomodations

I'm planning to drive down to New Orleans for Mardi Gras this March. We are going as a group of 4 guys, all college students. At this point though, we're having trouble finding lodging in the city. All hotels within French Quarter / Downtown business Center Area are over $ 200 - 250 a night. My questions are
1) Does anybody know a place in $100 - $150 range ?
2) How necessary is it to stay in the French Quarter to experience Mardi Gras ?

It is not necessary to stay in the French Quarter, but I would suggest trying to find a room as close as possible. Most of the Mardi Gras mayhem occurs in the Quarter and it should not be missed. However, the parades are best seen along St. Charles or as they wind their way through the CBD and Warehouse District (Canal Street is too much of a mob scene). Try the Residence Inn, Marriott Courtyard, Holiday Inn, or YMCA in the Warehouse District (all within a few blocks of the Quarter) or the Ramada Inn or Hampton Inn on St. Charles (10-15 minute streetcar ride to the Quarter).

Hate to tell you this but the YMCA is $300.00 per night (single) during Mardi Gras!.....$35.00 per night at regular times.

Believe it or not, you're already late if just now planning for Mardi Gras 2000. Many places fill up within a few days of the PREVIOUS Mardi Gras... As for cheap places, I don't think you'll find any near the French Quarter or parade routes, as demand is high and prices will vary accordingly. I'd paya higher price to stay in the Quarter, of course...it's really no fun staying in the suburbs, fighting heavy Mardi Gras traffic out there, and then having to drive/park downtown.
