New Orleans-Maison Esplanade Guest House

I have a trip to New Orleans coming up, and have reservations at Maison Esplanade Guest House on Esplanade Avenue. Has anyone ever stayed there, or have any comments or advice?
Thanks,
Becky

If it is across Rampart Street, don't walk at night.

Stayed there last Jazz Fest. As SC said don't walk at night. Be sure to visit Port of Call down the street. GREAT burgers!!

Actually, it IS across Rampart but since this area has developed so much in recent years I'm not sure what parts are dangerous. If you're lucky, John will comment on this place because he'll have a better idea of its relative safety. Becky - the rule of thumb for years was that you shouldn't stay (or walk) beyond Rampart, which is the edge of the French Quarter. And in fact, it's not advisable to walk ON Rampart at night. Out of curiosity, is there any particular reason you've chosen this place? Do you know if it's licensed?

Where's John? He hasn't responded on this board for quite a while. He sure helped a lot of people!

Rampart has been picking up lately. It isn't as bad as it was 2 years ago, still people should be cautious almost anywhere these days. There are several little hotels and some go back a few blocks into Treme. Most of the streets are in better shape until you get to Claiborne Ave which then gets run down. The prices of those little hotels, like the Empress Hotel, is very low. I believe $35.00 per night so the savings may make up for the cab fare to the walkable area of the Quarter. As long as you know what to expect then you will not be surprised about the area.

I can't believe ANYONE would recommend staying in the Treme. This is NOT a good area even though it is next to the French Quarter. Maybe 10 years from now it will be okay, but not now. As for Claiborne Avenue I won't even drive there at night.
