New Orleans - Give me the 411!

I've had msgs on here before, but I will be in New Orleans in June with my guy. Any info on what to do, where to go, suggestions, would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Dear K.C.: How long will you be in New Orleans? What are your major interests? There's LOTS to do here in south Louisiana but some of it will appeal to one age group and some of it will appeal to a different group. Mainly New Orleans is known for gourmet food, for jazz music, and--in June--for a rather hot sticky climate. You can use it as a base for exploring plantation country up and down the Mississippi; or travel by river steamer to places such as the Chalmette Battlefield (where Andrew Jackson defeated the British AFTER the War of 1812 had ended. You can stroll around the French Quarter have coffee and beignets at the French Market; or ride the St. Charles Avenue trolley out to the Garden District. Life is slower here but people are friendly and helpful. Come and enjoy. Joan

I am considering a trip over the summer with my husband. A few things: Does TWA fly there and are there any casinos there? How hot would it be mid August? How can I get a travelers guide?

Dear Kimberly: Well, August is just about our hottest month--but it can be endured because air conditioning is almost universal now--so tho' the outside temperature may be in the 90's (and the humidity to match), there is no need to be uncomfortable. There are casinos within easy reach (tho' the one in the city may or may not be open again by August); and TWA does fly into New Orleans International Airport (probably from its hub in St. Louis but I've not used it in a while so am not sure about what other cities it serves). Even in August there is plenty to do and enjoy in New Orleans--so come and enjoy. Good trip. Joan

I've been to New Orleans in March & August, several times. August is hot, but bearable. March can be beautiful or rainy. I've had both. My favorite hotel is the Windsor Court. Near the waterfront & French Quarter. Like a Ritz or 4 Seasons. The Grill is one of the best restuarants in the city and the roof top pool is spectacular. Don't Emeril's or the Cafe du Monde. You will never forgive yourself. Arnaud's is also very good. Skip Commander's Palace, even if every one tells you to go there. Lots of terrific walking tours. A great city to walk in. Have a great time.
