I've lived in midtown east since I came to NYC after college. (Short fory to Grammercy Park but when the upstairs neighbor was murdered, I got out of there..near Simons Hardware) I then of midtown chose that area because of the NYC Parks Dept indoor pool. (I know, strange way to choose a neighborhood, and I could walk to work.
There then came a time I was dying to move to the EV. Told this to my parents who made such a fuss about how my grandparents did everything they could to get them OUT of that area and now I was going to move down there....on and on...being the good girl I am, I caved, and here I remain, in midtown east.

We are native NY'ers but a similar situation. Both of my grandfathers worked like dogs to get out of the LES and their idiot grandson, thinks it is a wonderful neighborhood. (It was wretched until about 25 years ago.)

I never finished this report, leaving out the details of our drive to Eunice and our stay at a B&B in a renovated Arcandian cottage outside the town, for two nights.

We planned our visit for the weekend so we could enjoy three local music events, held every Saturday:
Live radio show at 9am at Fred's in Mamou--astounding experieince..worth driving from far, far away to attend.
Late morning live performance at Savoy Music Center outside Eunice
Live radio broadcast from the state of Liberty Theatre in Eunice
After the drive from New Orleans:
We meant to go to Hawk's on the first night, for crawfish, but from our B&B it was quite a drive in the pouring rain, so we opted to go to DI's instead. This turned out to be a terrific surprise, as they had a live band and a dancefloor, in addition to great crawfish. One of those rare places where the total experience was as good as what was on our plates. The friendliness of everyone we met there was astounding...I guess they do not get too many "foreigners," as we became quite the center of attention when word got around that we were visiting from New York. Once he heard the news, the owner came over and sat with us through dinner, showing me how to eat my first Lousiana crawfish.

This is the report I posted on TA (I rarely write reviews there but this evening was so special that I thought it worth adding):

<Once in a Lifetime Experience
We are two New York City people who spent 4 nights in New Orleans before venturing west to Cajun country for the weekend. Having never eaten crawfish before, we entered with some trepidation. But once inside the door, we knew there and then that we were in for an experience that was never to be forgotten.
Oh, my goodness, every single person we encountered here was incredibly welcoming. And we had the supreme pleasure of sharing our table with the son of founder, D. I., and the present owner of the restaurant: Corey Fruge. Not only does Corey preside over the restaurant but he is also a Senior Pilot with Delta Airlines!! Boy, does Corey have stories to share!!
The place was packed on a Friday night but the fabulous Brenda made space for us at a table with a great view of the dance floor. Not only is the food great, but there is music and dancing on weekends.
And the food: WOW!!! For a novice crawfish eater like myself, two pounds would be a good started order, but do not neglect the gumbo. My partner who does not favor shellfish was more than happy with chicken fried steak but please, if at all possible, try the crawfish, gumbo and other local specialties. The menu is quite vast and varied. WORTH A DETOUR, as Michelin would say!>
