One of our guide books said that on the Sunday after St. Joseph's Day (March 24th) the Mardi Gras Indians will have their "Super Sunday" annual parade/mock confrontation. Is this happening? If so, where? If you have any information please let me know!

I wouldn't go see the MG Indians unless I packed heat. It's very dangerous.

Previous poster is right, just follow the sound of gunfire if you are determined. Seriously, think twice before attending. The best place and safest place to see the Mardi Gras indians is at JazzFest, last weekend of April, first weekend of May.

After reading this post, I am concerned. We are arriving in NO on the afternoon of the 24th and planned to walk along the river and maybe take the ferry ride to Algiers. Will we run into this thing, whatever it is. Thanks

No, you will not, this takes place uptown, though I'm not sure where, sorry, Kyle.

Anonymous: You have nothing to fear. You will not run into or happen across this event unless you make it a habit to tour crack homes and public housing projects. You will be perfectly safe. But do keep in mind that there is much more to do in New Orleans than walk along the river and take the ferry over to Algiers.

Also, to Emmy, please don't refer to the Mardi Gras Indians parade as somewhere "uptown". Unfortunately the media in New Orleans refers to anything upriver of Lee Circle as uptown. That includes the Garden District, the Tulane and Loyola University areas, Audubon Park and Zoo,Carrolton and Riverbend, any of which are perfectly safe (in fact probably some the safest parts of N.O.)

Super Sunday was actually the weekend before St. Joseph's Day this year. There are actually two events; one uptown near LaSalle & Washington and one downtown at Bayou St. John.

Neither are areas that people from outside the area would normally visit, but we've felt very safe and welcome at events both sites. The downtown event starts in a big park right at the edge of Mid-City, so its probably more accessible. Realistically, if you're easily intimidated by the realities of inner cities, its probably something to pass on. As my son said last year, "If you only do things with people like you, you miss out on some fun things."
