Never been to Texas before...
Considering a vacation in Jan/Feb or March - can anyone tell me if there are nice beach areas on the Texas coast (Galveston area?) We've also heard San Antonio Riverwalk area is nice to explore. We're looking for a relaxing place with good restaurants, small shops, local history, slow-paced. Warm weather a big plus - any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Kaye,
I think taking a vacation in March to San Antonio, the weather is pleasant that time of year and South Padre is a much prettier beach, it's a 4.5 hour drive fr; SA. SA has great little shops along the river and I think you would enjoy it. I think you will be disappointed w/ Glaveston beach last time I was there, the beach was full of seaweed. South Padre Island is a pretty beach and there is much to do on the island. Also, Matamoras is about 30 mi away. So you can also go into Mexico for some shopping.

All Texas is great, but San Antonio is a good choice for winter. Great history[Alamo] good art and museums, great food on Riverwalk. Good sidetrips to Fredricksburg, Hill Country.. I hear Havana hotel[?] is great. My daughter lives there and loves it. Go for it!

Listen to what they're telling you about Galveston. It's suffered a lot from beach erosion. Texas is a great beach destination in general but South Padre is probably the best. It's pretty touristy but Winter is low season so shouldn't be bad; don't come in March. Spring Break can get really ugly unless you're about 22 years old or younger! The weather won't be what I call warm- average about 60's maybe into the 70's if you get lucky, cooler at night. I don't recommend the Bahia Mar. It's overrated and not well located; they get a lot of press because they host the Miss Texas pageant!
San Antonio is also a logical choice to add. It has a lot of history and personality. There's a time in Jan or Feb where they drain the Riverwalk to clean it; find out when it is if you want to avoid that. The Hyatt and Marriott on the Riverwalk are excellent places to stay or the Hyatt Hill Country Resort if you want to get away from it all!
