Faralon - incredible decor a must see.
Mostly sea food on the menu - but fabulous. Fun and very trendy
Aqua - a S.F. local favorite. Great ambiance - incredible food. Seafood too.
Postrio - a popular established SF favorite. Wolfgang Puck's place
Fifth Floor and Rubicon have the best wine lists in S.F.
The best Sushi on the planet is in Sausalito - just outside of SF - it is called Sushi Ran and you need to be there by 5:30 pm or there is no hope.
SF has some of the best restaurants in the country.
Wish you luck - Make reservations now - October is one of the busiest times a year to book hotels and restaurants.

I live near S.F. and there are many good restaurants. Hard to pick one!
If you are looking for something a little different, Foreign Cinema Restaurant on Mission St. is nice.
It's unique in that while you eat in a large, open-aired patio they show a foreign film. There you will find French cuisine.
The Cliff House Restaurant has a great location. It is right on the water and if you reserve a table by the window and time it just right, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset. The food is good but not tremedous. The appetizers are good...fried calamari, salmon crabcakes. Has been there since the late 1800s.
You must go to The Fairmont Hotel. Many VIPs and celebrities stay there. (even the Beatles in the 60's) If you don't eat there, at least go to the top floor for a coctail. The view is awesome!!
Hope this helps a little.

Check out www.sanfran.com as it is the web site for the local PBS station's monthly magazine. On the home page of the web site and on the right are 2 reviews of local restaurants: 50 very best restaurants and Readers Poll. Very informative.
Do not however, refer to San Francisco as "San Fran". We locals prefer either "The City" or just San Francisco.
