Need NYC HELP!

I will be visiting NYC for two days this January(two adults and an 11 year old). We will be staying in Manhattan and need hotel help! Does anyone know of good, centrally located hotels(Close to shopping of course!!!)? I would like to stay between $150 & $200 if possible!
Are those Apple Tours worth while?
We've been to NYC several times and stayed with relatives by Central Park, but I prefer to stay at a hotel in this area, this time, as we hope to do some sightseeing. If any one has any good suggestions on nice hotels & dining suggestions, I would sincerely appreciate any assistance!
Thank you

Apple Tours look like they'd be fun for awhile on a beautiful day. This morning, coincidentally, very early (9am) I saw an emptyish one going up W72 st. (1st time I saw that) & a few hardy souls sitting on the top. Looked appealing, or apple-ing.
Maybe if you hit a warm spell in Jan.???
Hotel-wise: On the Avenue (79th near Bwy) is supposed to be nice & there is a simple & small new hotel on W.71st just off CentralPark West that looks decent--its either a comfort inn or a quality inn. In the area is also the Oliver Cromwell, W72. It seems popular with Japanese tourist groups; thats all I know. Hope this helps. Enjoy NYC!

I just received a mailing from The Marriott Marquis this morning. I had to count them out before Christmas as the cheapest room I could get was $489., but a lot of dates in January are available at $189. January 7 and January 28 are available at $139 --bargain of the century. If you call them ask about rate program LLOA for the $189 rate, and rate program LLOQ if you are including either Jan. 7 or 28.

Have stayed at the Roosevelt (reserved through www.180096hotel.com), which was a nice hotel and not very far from the major sites (St. Patricks, Rockefeller, etc.).

Also have stayed at the Midford Plaza on 7th or 8th around 42nd or so. Great location -- Roosevelt was a little nicer.

Am trying the Plaza 50 Suites this time -- am going Thanksgiving weekend.

Mary, please report back on Plaza 50. I have been trying to get a first hand account of that place for a possible extended stay as they have mainly apartments.

Wow - if you can catch those rates at the Marriott Marquis, go for it. I can't think of a more fun place for an 11 to stay.
