Need info on Maui.
We would appreciate any information you can give us on the Westin Maui Resort. We will be staying there the first week of March. Also we would like any restaurant suggestions. Is there a tour that takes you to the top of the volcano to watch the sunrise without riding the bike down the mountain for 38 miles? I heard about the helecopter ride. Is it really worth the 240.00 dollars? Can you suggest a good whale watching tour? Thanks so much in advance.

Aloha MArgeret, You'l arrive just as we leave. This is 8th trip. Never stayed at Westin, it looks nice but I recall someone commenting that the rooms were small. No 1st hand knowledge, never been in lobby.
Restaurants. Roy's or Nicolina's in Kahana. They are same ownership and serve the best Pacific Rim cuisine in the islands. A Pacific Cafe in Kihie. Hailemaile General Store. Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina. There are just so many but the above will get you started.
I believe Roberts Tours do a Haeleakala tour. Check with the books that are at the airport- Maui Gold or This Week in Maui.
We have done the helicopter tour on each of the islands and IMHO Kauai is best , second is the Big Island followed by Maui. Having done each, I don't think it's worth it.
I just made plans for something new for us. The Trilogy all day trip to Lanai. I don't have info with me but I found it on the web search trilogy. It sounds like a neat trip and Lanai is supposed to have 2 very nice resorts and a real nic e beach.
email if you have any othe r questions.

Margaret,
We went to Maui for a week on our honeymoon in Sept. '97 and it was wonderful! We stayed at the Hyatt which is right next to the Westin. We did drink at the pool bar at the Westin one day and walked through the lobby, but we weren't impressed. I also heard the rooms aren't worth the money. The restaurant you MUST go to is the Plantation House. It overlooks a golf course and was the best food we had while we were there, although a bit pricey. (What's not in Hawaii!) We had dinner there, but I hear the brunch is also fabulous. Do the luau in Old Lanai - very authentic. We did the helicopter ride through Air Maui which was expensive, but a good way to see everything. The road to Hana is long, time-consuming, and a stressful drive. Friends we met even got car-sick on the way down! You'll love it - we can't wait to get back! If you have any other questions, you can e-mail me direct. Good luck!

The Westin is a beautiful hotel, right in the middle of Kaanapali Beach, the very best location on Maui.
The best restaurants on Maui (all within 15 minutes drive from the Westin) are:
Hula Grill (can walk from the Westin),
Nicolina (in Kahana),
A Pacific Cafe (in Honokowai).
Yes, there is are tours to the sunrise at the top of the volcano WITHOUT needing to ride a bike back down. Or you can drive to the top yourself, but I wouldn't advise it in the dark before sunrise.
Best whale watching tour is Pacific Whale Foundation.
I'm too scared to take the helicopter tour.
LOTS more info about things to see and do, as well as hotels and restaurants, on Maui, is in the 30-page paper you can download from this web site:
