Saturday morning Farmers Mkt..this can take up an hour or two.
Japanese Gardens the same. Add in getting to the Gardens from where ever you are.
Now lunch..I would have it in town, don't start driving looking for a winery AND somewhere to eat.
Sunday might be more traffic, more people at the wineries etc.
SO many places in town for a lovely lunch, any kind that you would want.

Wineries are about an hour / give or take from town, but add in slow traffic and long traffic lights..you go on a highway that is slow...annoyingly so.

Personally, I would skip the wineries..
Dinner:
casual authentic Italian- Piazza Italia in the Pearl

Vietnamese/wonderful - in the Pearl

Wildwood, NW

Typhoon

Everett Street Bistro in the Pearl

SouthPark ( where the Farmers Mkt takes place)

I will leave the rest to the locals who helped us when we lived there

ok. My favorite Restaurants:

Marakkesh - Moroccan, all inclusive price. More than a meal - an event. NW 21st

Swagat - Indian, buffet for lunch. NW 21st.

Heathman Hotel - high tea, pricey but you're paying for the atmosphere. Downtown

Heathman Hotel - French, worth it. Downtown.

Hoda's - Lebanese. Get two of the combinations and share. Cozy, walls painted like a Lebanese village. Nice, friendly service and prices, and cooks who care. Belmont St.

Thanh Thao - Vietnamese/Thai. Good prices, good food, not much atmosphere, but who cares in this case? 40th and NE Hawthorne.

Papa Haydn's - Continental cuisine, great desserts. Like walking into a bakery in Germany. High prices for desserts, but how often do you eat these ones? I recommend the French onion soup and the chevre pate plate (ask for more bread). NW 23rd St.

Thanh Thao - my description of the food was underwhelming on rereading it. Let's amend that to great food. Ask for the pad thai to be thai style, if you get it, with extra bean sprouts.

Nightbird, did you find the buffet at Swagats better than just their dinner menu food?
We went twice..once more to see if they were as awful as the first time we tried them ...they were.
So maybe the buffet is what we should have chosen?

I heard such praise for Papa Haydns before we moved to Portland, we went more than we should have, hoping it was better..again..much of these places get praised way past their praiseworthiness...most if not all of their cakes/bakery goods are dry as dust and choke you..
Sandwiches at lunch are dull and uninspired ..and service tends to be uninterested.

Go next door to Jo Bar...
Their brick oven pizza, anything cooked on that open hearth as well as sandwiches and soup are fantastic!

I agree about the Heathman High Tea though..charming..and I like the Heathman Bar after a ballet next door..

portlandfood.org is a good place to find really current reviews and in depth chat on food from Portland foodies

Scarlett,

In my opinion, one should always get Indian food in a buffet setting, rather than the dinner route. You want a variety when you get Indian; it's how it's served in India. Dinner is way overpriced in comparison, and if you get something marginal you're stuck with it. Also, if you know good Indian food, you can ask for some lemon and also use the yogurt sauce to bring it into where it should be. Swagat is good. The best one in town that I know about, however, and I've gone to most, is New Delhi on Barbur Boulevard. Again, go to the lunch buffet. I didn't offer it as a choice to MickiMc because it's out of the way for them. At New Delhi, they go the extra mile themselves, and I normally don't have to change it. Again, go for the buffet.

As to Papa Haydn's, I always get Boccone Dolce or, my personal favorite, Autumn Meringue. My daughter gets the Raspberry Terrine. We generally stick to these ones, so you may be right. I recently had to choose another cake because both of my favorites were gone, and was sadly dissappointed. Try these two (three?) and you won't be dissappointed. The Autumn Meringue gives you a chocolate fix that will last a month, and really could be shared with another.
I go to the original Papa Haydn's on Milwaukie Ave but, once again, that's out of the way for MickiMc. I just won't pay that much for a sandwich, so I've never gotten one there. I've had some pasta's that were very good. My standbys, though, are the onion soup (authentic) and the chevre pate plate, which includes roasted garlic & pimentos, cornichons, greek olives, and a pate of chevre and sun-dried tomatoes to spread on toast and bread. It's a winner!

Thanks Nightbird!

My husband lived in India and we used to eat it all the time in NY...so I was disappointed to find it lacking in Portland..but obviously, I didn't go about it the right way

Since we lived on the NW side of town, we tended to stay around there when we ate out...( mostly because we were directionally challenged when living in Portland)

But we did find a couple of places and enjoyed them on the Eastside..Halibuts ( something similar to my NC childhood-greasy fries and fish lol)..and Wives Tales..
I forget where else .. somewhere in Sellwood too..

So you are going to NC? how about that for small world
Asheville is where I heard of gem mining ..my mom used to live there.

Oh and Gee thanks a lot! for telling me about a Chocolate Fix that I am too far away to indulge in!!

Yes, I'm going to NC, SC and GA very soon. I think that Crabtree is the best option for hunting gems.

Sorry about the chocolate..lol. Probably better it's out of reach.

I'm not sure I want to top this thread for fear of R5's bomb going off but I think MickiMc still has a few unanswered questions hanging out there.

If it's a couple wineries, you'll probably want to go as far as Newberg, but if just one will work, I'd suggest Ponzi. It's one of Oregon's pioneer wineries, and a bit off the beaten path, maybe 30 minutes from Portland. Their tasting room closes at 5:00pm, but don't try and cut it too close. Wine roads will be heavily traveled that weekend; it's one of the two busiest in the year.

It's hard to say with traffic these days, but give yourselves 3.5 hours from Florence to Portland.

Did we cover everything? ;-)

My husband and I stayed at the Overleaf Lodge in Yachats for two nights a couple of years ago and enjoyed it very much. It is clean and comfortable, with friendly service and great views including whale-watching right from our room! Good breakfasts too.
