Need advise....Taking an elderly parent to Maui!

Hello I'm taking my Mom to Maui in october, and she has problems with her knees and back. What type of activities can she do, if any? I would really hate to leave her at the hotel and go exploring with the rest of our group. Can you guys give me some advise on what type of things I can include her in.

Thanks
Tanasha

Can she climb a few stairs? If so, what about an excursion on the Atlantis Sub? My mother & in-laws loved it. Could she go on a dinner cruise or to a luau? There is a tram tour at the Maui tropical plantation. You may be able to rent a wheelchair at the aquarium. Take her to dinner at Mama's Fishhouse - it's beautiful there.

Yeah she can climb a few steps. It's just walking long distances and standing for a long period of time will be just awful for her. If there is sitting available for her to walk a little and then sit and rest then walk again, then that is fine.

Yeah thanks Ajcolorado. I had those excursons in mind.

Keep the ideas coming guys!

A couple of drives to see the sights: Road to Hana and the sunrise at the summit of Haleakela. Both offer beautiful scenery/views.

The Pacific Whale Foundation boat trip to Lanai might be an option if she likes boats. They do anchor to snorkel for a while but you don't have to get off the boat, and you really see some nice views of Maui and Lanai from the water. There are seats and an inside area to get out of the sun, on the way back we were surrounded by spinner dolphins -- just great! Also, a luau is a great experience at least once. I hear the Feast at Lele is really good and upscale and it is in a great waterfront location right in Lahaina.

To see the crater/volcano at Haleakala you can do it mostly all by car. Very little walking could be involved.

Old Lahaina Luau (reserve early and get table seating not the matts on the ground) or Feast of Lele for a luau, either would be great with little walking or standing necessary.

I thought U'lalena at Myth & Magic Theater in Lahaina was a fantastic evening (a cirque de soile style show with history of the islands, live song, music and dance). It's in a normal theater so again, little walking or standing required.

We took my mom to Maui and Kauai when she was 84. We did nearly everything that we would normally do on a Hawaiian vacation, just a bit more slowly. However, we didn't take her up to the Haleakala summit, were concerned about the altitude. We had her ask her doctor before we went and he nixed the high altitude on her behalf.

She went into the pool at the Hyatt -- with one of us always near-by in case of any problems (thankfully there weren't any).

Since she had never been to Hawaii everything was a new experience for her. She particularly enjoyed the garden in the upcountry, I think it's called Enchanted Maui Gardens, or maybe Maui Enchanted. She also enjoyed the Iao Needle. We had to take that one very slowly, but she walked up and down the steps and loved it.

She particularly liked the Tropical Plantation, bought gifts and souvenirs there. We took the tour there, easy for her to sit and listen to the tour guide.

In terms of places to eat, she's still talking about the Swan Court breakfast buffet.

After the trip we developed our pictures and put together an album she could show her friends -- definitely a good idea that she appreciated.

Oh, almost forgot, as a surprise we ordered a lei greeting for her and she was just thrilled with it. I took a picture of her almost immediately after we gave it to her, put it as the first picture in the album.
