There are two chains that might interest you. Both are in neighboring states, but one is primarily in Nebraska - Runza. They serve a bierock, dough filled with beef, pork, cabbage and onions. The other is heavy to Iowa, Maid-Rite, which serves "loose meat" burgers.
The Amana Colonies, just off I-80 in eastern Iowa have many great German influenced restaurants. There are also several wineries where you can get wines like dandelion & rhubarb, and a great market with smoked meats.
The Maytag Dairy is just off I-80 in Newton. They have great blue cheese.
Omaha has a local sandwich called a cheese frenchee - a trimmed American cheese sandwich with mayo, cut in quarters, frozen, coated with French dressing, rolled in cornflakes and deep fried. Shirley's Diner is a good place for those and other dishes like chicken fried steak, chili, onion rings, or breakfasts. Their French toast is very good. The restaurant looks bland is a very plain strip center, but the interior s filled with 50s memorabilia and toys.

Did not get to stop by or try any of these suggestions during our trip but did have a fried pork tenderloin sandwich in Winterset, IA at the North Side Cafe. It was HUGE! Great malts there too and friendly service. If you are in town, I'd take some time to get a drink of something to eat there.
