and if flights are cancelled at SLC or DEN there may not be any flights until the next day either. Denver gets backed up all the time. Twice last spring, when I was there, they closed the entire evening due to high wind. So, even where you are connecting to FCA(Kalispell) can be a determining factor. I had much rather be at a smaller airport than a larger one if flights are cancelled, much easier to find someone to help you and much easier to get to a hotel that isn't full.
I agree with the first two posters-Kalispell. I am flying there myself the second week of July connecting in Denver. I bet they have plenty of equipment to deal with weather in Kalispell.

Kalispell is also reached from LA through Seattle via Alaska Air. FYI flights cancelled or delayed in this area (Kalispell) usually occur in the fall and winter due to fog. Some are diverted to Missoula and then bussed up to Kalispell, a 2 hour drive. Other times of year are not normally a problem.

Great.
I actually got stuck in the Big City (Missoula) because of thunderstorms. Kalispell was open and flying, but they didn't have any room for me!
I think I was trying to make the point that Starrs made: many vacation destinations have relatively few flights. Not a problem if you are retired or plan your trip to be home a day earlier than you have to be. Frustrating if you assume you will get home on the 1st and don't.
On the other hand, back in my road warrior days, people hated to fly with me because I was on so many delayed and cancelled flights!

I don't see what difference it makes in the number of flights an airport has. You still are going to have problems if you are delayed. Yeah, they can reroute you, etc. But more flights mean more people flying. Ask any of those folks stranded by weather delays in the east and I bet all of them would have rather been at an airport with a few flights a day instead of say Newark or JFK.
