National Park Week
For those of you traveling this spring, National Park Week will be April 21-29 this year. All parks will have free admission. Those of you who already have lifetime passes might want to schedule a trip that is not during this time as parks will probably be more crowded than the weeks before and after. Those who do not have a pass, this will be a great opportunity to visit parks without an entrance fee.
In either case, enjoy the parks.

I agree with emallory that if you already have a lifetime pass or have purchased a year pass, the free days are not the time to be in the parks!
Here are more of the free days for 2012 from the National Park Blog:

The 2012 National Parks free days have also been announced and as expected, they are quite similar to the 2011 free National Parks days with the main difference being the June fee free day which in 2011 was the first day of summer, but in 2012 will be on Get Outdoors Day in June.
January 14 – 16 (Martin Luther King Jr. weekend)
April 21 – 29 (National Park Week)
June 9 (Get Outdoors Day)
September 29 (National Public Lands Day)
Nov. 10 – 12 (Veterans Day weekend)

spriobulldog, My only experience at Smoky Mountains was over the 4th of July weekend in 1990. Can you say parking lot! That's what the Cades Cove road was like....a parking lot!
My experience in Zion while over a free weekend was it was a little more crowded than a normal weekend.

I am camping there at Elkmont CG with my 13 year old nephew. I am debating about going somewhere else. I really wanted to hike and spend the night at Leconte Lodge, but I didn't get my permit/lottery reservation for it. I think they have like 15 or 20 cabins is all, so they are a little hard to come by. I have driven thru the park about 30 years ago with my parents, so I would have been about 13 or 14. I don't remember us even stopping though.
