Naples Vacation
My wife, my sister, her husband and I are coming over to Naples (La Playa) between Nov 8th and 22nd, moving on to Orlando (Royal Pacific resort) for our final three nights.
Information on these pages, particularly from Patrick and LMF has been invaluable. I am new to posting on this, or indeed any website so can not speak with experience of any others, however the helpful and caring advise (and not to forget time) given by almost all contributors here reminds me that one of the nicest things about travelling is meeting people.
Anyway, back to the reason for posting:
I have made a list of previous recommendations but couldn't get locations for Cove Inn coffee shop,The White House, Three sisters,Mimi's cafe.
Any help appreciated. Hoggy

The White House is 1716 Airport Rd S.,
just south of the intersection of Davis and Airport Rd, in between the day labor place and the tatoo body branding
place. Three Sisters is on Davis, #2206, the south side of the street across from Oaks Farm Market. The Cove Inn coffee shop is in the Cove Inn (good pancakes), 900 Broad Ave S.

A couple of favorites at Cove Inn Coffee Shop (this is just a couple blocks from my place, so eat breakfast there often) are SOS (Sailor on Shore) which is really a variation of the old army S__T on a Shingle -- creamed chipped beef on toast (best on rye). Also, I love their eggs Napoli. They put a slice of muenster cheese in a non-stick skillet then put two eggs on top of them and baste them till done. Put this over an order of hashbrowns and it is pure heaven (and if you're quiet enough you can hear your arteries clog)!
Cove Inn Coffee Shop is a very casual place, but the White House and Three Sisters are more "truck stop" or dare I be politically incorrect and say "trailer trash" places. I'm not knocking that -- have breakfast at both places -- just so you know they are a different clientele from Cove Inn Coffee Shop.
Where's Mimi's Cafe?

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I've quote got the hang of this yet. I ended up submitting two posts as I ran out of space with the first. Then somehow placed them in the wrong order. When searching for either by inserting "Naples" I get nothing. Clicking on my screen name brought up the two postings but indicated no responses. Only when I clicked on the posted heading did I find responses to one. I think I'd better email Fodors for an idiots guide as I thought I had followed their proceedure.
Anyway, as I was saying, thanks for the replies. Can I assume some correlation between Patrick's "politically incorrect" comments and newt's landmark directions for the White House?! To hell with the stiff upper lip, I think we may stick to the Cove Inn coffee shop. Schmerl, do you think we will need reservations (other than on the day) for Tchoup Chop? I rather thought we would be ok as we are staying at the hotel.
Patrick, the eggs Napoli "sound" great. I take drugs to control my clogging so I will ask my GP to modify the dosage to suit!
On checking my notes I see Mimi's cafe is in the Fort Myers area, not really in your striking distance for breakfast I suppose.
In case my other posting has ceased to be, may I raise the other two questions here?
In a report on La Playa I read of a breakfast place about a mile away called LuLu Bees. Any opinions? and if good, some location advise please.
Lastly for now I was trying to find out what happened to Michaels that used to be in the Hibiscus centre somewhere on the 41 (this road through Naples is always longer than we remember each time we visit and we never seem to be able to fix locations along its length). We found the food to be excellent and you could walk next door to a linked jazz club. I know it is many years since we "lost" it but did it relocate or simply fold?

First of all, I think that you will love staying at LaPlaya. Great choice!
The restaurant LuLu Bees is in a shopping plaza which houses Stenimart, amongst other stores (I love Steinmart and wish one were nearby where I live!). The restaurant is sort of a themed-restaurant with a 1950's jukebox feel to it. Loud colors, etc. I think it is more reknown for its personality than it's food.
If you have ever seen Judge Judy on T.V., you might find it interesting to know that while she was away shooting her television program, her husband made off with one of the waitresses from this restaurant. It was all over the newspapers and tabloids. I don't think that this place is know for its outstanding food. Although it's tough to screw up breakfast, IMHO.
There is a place across the street on 41 that has a great breakfast, I believe it is called the Channel Marker. Perhaps a local can help with that advice.
Enjoy Naples....

Hoggy,
You will DEFINITELY need reservations in advance to Tchoup Chop. It doesn't matter if you are staying at the hotel. The book up quickly for dinner. The dinner menu is MUCH better than the lunch menu (although we greatly enjoyed our lunch there too). We made reservations about a month in advance and only had a choice of two times at that point. As I said, you can make reservations on opentable.com. Tchop Chop also wants you to confirm your reservations on that day. We LOVED it there. Great service and fantastic food.

Paul, thanks for the background on LuLu Bees. Sounds like the sort of information the tram tour guides could make use of.
Schmerl, thanks for the advise regarding reservations. I'll diary myself a reminder to do it nearer the time of our visit.
Curt, thanks for the info on Mimi's. Doesn't sound too exiting but as Paul says it's hard to screw up breakfast. However I find that it can be fun to hit on a place that is popular with the locals ( subject to the type of "clientele" - thanks for the warning Patrick) who generally are more likely to engage in conversation at this time of day. At dinner, or even lunch, people are (quite rightly in my opinion) more focussed on their partner/friends/clients/food. It almost seems rude to chat beyond an initial "good evening". Or maybe this is just a British thing?

Weimer, sorry for the delayed thanks,I was up north (we live in Essex on the outskirts of London) for a couple of days in Scunthorpe on a corporate entertaining golf trip and very nice it was too!
I'll look out for the Turtle Inn. I gather it is one of the few restaurants right on the beach along with La Playa and Naples Beach Hotel. Although my recollection of the latter is that it relies heavily on it's location rather than it's cuisine to attract customers.
While I'm here, a question for Patrick (if you read this) or indeed for anyone's opinion. I registered recently on the Naples Daily News website to view archive areas that were previously accessible to casual visitors. In particular the Dining out section. I checked out the reviews before we came last year for a moderately priced recommendation. There was little short of a rave review for Beau's Paradise Grill at the Holiday Inn (4* = extraordinary..."Hotel dining doesn't get much better than this"). We went, perhaps with unrealistically elevated expectations. It was not horrible but was supremely mediocre. In my experience hotel dining does get a lot better (if you know where to go!).
I think I remember reading a posting from Patrick discussing reasons that the NDN reviews may be "fudged" for want of a better expression. My question (finally I hear you say), is do you think ANY of these reviews stand up to close scrutiny, let alone be worth putting to the test so to speak?

Interesting comments about the reviews. I seldom put a lot of stock in them (just like my trepidation with theatre reviews), and ironically Beau's Paradise Grill just closed for lack of business a week or so ago. No one ever seemed to understand how that Holiday Inn dining room got such a rave review.
Regarding Michael's at Hibiscus Center -- it closed quite some time ago. That space is just now reopening as a Melting Pot, a "chain" that features fondues.
When you have breakfast at the Cove Inn Coffee Shop, be prepared for talk across the room, from waitresses as well as other customers. It's a very friendly place, where a top Naples stock broker may be at one table, the mayor at another, and a lawn care group of workers at another.
Hate to be picky, but it's the Turtle Club (not Inn) -- and sadly they're still doing a lot of major construction on a huge project next door which takes a bit away from the beach atmosphere. Yes, it is one of the few places where you can sit right on the beach. The food's OK, the spot is the thing!
Paul, you've got me on that "Channel Marker" thing. Maybe First Watch? That's a very popular breakfast spot. There are two of them, one across from Lowdermilk Park on the beach near downtown, and the other in the shopping center on 41 behind PF Chang's where the Expo is.
And Paul, what a wealth of information you are. I sort of knew that Judge Judy story, but didn't know it was a waitress from Lulu Bee's (which I think is totally uninspired by the way). My friend Doug waits on Judge Judy a lot at Pazzo -- apparently a favorite of hers.

Patrick, thank you for the further information. Needless to say the demise of Beau's Paradise Grill did not come as a great suprise. A shame about Michaels though. It always seemed very busy when we were there. I remember we had to remind a waitress once that she had forgotten to include a (not cheap) bottle of wine on our bill. Perhaps they did this too often for their own good!
I was a little worried by the mention of major construction works next door to the Turtle Club. Is this very close to La Playa, or is it far enough away not to impact on our stay? We're there from 8th Nov for two weeks.

The construction next to the Turtle Club will NOT impact your stay at LaPlaya.
Of course, the way things are happening around here, by November they may have torn down buildings on both sides of LaPlaya and started building new "mega monsters".
