Naples Fl, 3 nts, 3/31/06 w/ 2 adults and 12 y.o. for $245 nt or less - Inn on 5th? Doubletree? Risk Priceline later next year?

We are going back to Naples, Fl for 3 nts starting 3/31/06. The next 5 nts we have a killer deal at the Doral Golf hotel in Miami for $199 a night for a suite. We liked the Doubletree ok when we stayed there 2 years ago without our daughter but it wasn't within walking distance to the beach and that was a drag for us. Back then it cost around $179 a nt, a great deal. Now it's $219 a night.

On the other hand, in the next corner, we have the Inn of Fifth. Yes, I looked on Trip advisor and they both get good reviews. The Inn on 5th would be nice as we could walk to the beach, and our kid LOVES the beach, but the room would be alot smaller. For $10 a nt they provide a cot and the rate is $243 a night with AAA.

Is this a no contest, just stay at the inn and deal with a smaller room for 3 nights to be in a much more exciting, cosmopolitan side of town with cool stores and restaurants right next to us? Or, is there maybe another hotel within walking distance to the beach, under $245 a night we're forgetting about that would be in an equally cool area, and still in Naples?

Wish we could get the Hyatt Coconut Pt for under $245 on Priceline that time of year but I doubt it. With Priceline we can't be guaranteed 3 to a room either, though I doubt that would be a problem at the Hyatt.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance. Patrick, are you out there? Maybe we can actually meet you for dinner this year down there!

Oh, stever, I am sorry to say that Patrick is unable to post an answer for you. He ran into a situation here recently that has caused him to be unable to post at this time.
I have hope that he will be back on Fodors very soon, he provides great information, he is amazingly well traveled and I for one, love his sense of humour.
So in the meantime, maybe someone else can help you..and this is topping your question Scarlett

Thx Scarlet - guess I'm out of the loop on that one as I've been busy with work and in Italy for 3 weeks vacationing...

Maybe someone else knows a bit about Naples accommodations?

How about Bayfront Inn? They have a shuttle to beach and it is still convenient to restaurants and shops. It has been recently renovated.

For location alone, the Inn on Fifth is going to be your best bet. Like you said, you can walk to the beach, you have many shops and stores right next to you as well. The only other hotel to check out that meets the requirement of within "walking distance" to the beach and shops/restaurants would be the Naples Grande, although they probably are way over your $245/night budget. You can walk to the newly-renovated Waterside Shops from the Grande which has lots of upscale and luxury shops and some fun restaurants.

Stever, don't risk priceline because that is Easter Week. Chances are, everything will sell out.

Book something and keep looking.

Thanks folks!!! So the Inn on 5th is $253 with a cot for our 12 year old that week, the Bayfront Inn is $279 for a junior suite with a pull out bed, 242 sq ft rm (still pretty small compared to our 325 sq ft Rennaissance hotel room in NYC we had 3 months ago), and the Bayfront's regular std room has a pull out sofa but is only... 225 sq ft I think they said. That's pretty tight. The price is better at $203 though.

The Naples Grande formerly the Registry looks killer but is $345 a night.

What would you do? At the Bayfront they claim you can walk to the beach but it's 20 min. They have a shuttle but sometimes that's inconvenient. Maybe it's not... We've already done the Doubletree once and their rooms are kind of perfect but we'd been there done that so we wanted to try something different.

At Bayfront they say that the Inn on 5th is noisy, with spring break folk at Mc Cabes in the lobby and it's crowded too. They say people prefer the quiet of the bay hotel that they are.

What to do?!? I'm tempted to just book the Inn on 5th as I like the idea of being near the shops and easier walk to the beach. But if it's a noisy area and the room isn't as nice, as it's alot older...

If walking to the beach is one of your main goals, I would not pick the Bayfront. It would be a very long walk, part of it along a busy section of highway. However, I know that McCabe's is often hopping that time of year. Maybe if you requested a room on the opposite side of the hotel from McCabe's, the noise would not be a problem? If it were me, I would choose the Inn on Fifth for the reasons you listed in your original post. I would much rather be in the thick of things downtown, where you could walk to dinner, if you chose, than across 9th St/41 where the Bayfront is located.

Thx BetsyinKY and concerned poster:

We looked up Trianon Hotel and their Superior room is $279 a night for 3/31 and $219 a nt for 4/1 and 4/2 less 10% off for AAA. Something about it looks a bit funky to me. Most people complained that the A/C smelled funky and that the rooms weren't that clean overall. The Inn on the 5th guy that took our reservation today said he'd try to give us a quiet room on the 3rd floor if possible. I guess we'll go with that unless we come up with something better in the meantime.

I think the Inn on the 5th looks better to us all around. The room is 400 Sq ft they claim! That's fairly huge, isn't it? That's alot bigger than our room in NYC was at the Rennaissance Times Sq, which was plenty big for the 3 of us.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, stever, but are any of you golfers? Anyone know about a place called GreenLinks? I can get it for a great rate on expedia. Is it a decent place, good golf course, reasonable driving distance from stuff to do in Naples?

Thanks, and back to you stever.

Naples: Green Links Golf Resort: "Loved it"
May 7, 2006: A TripAdvisor Member, Glasgow, Scotland

In a delightfully quiet location, we loved this classy, upmarket resort. They are privately owned condos and beautifully kept. We had a 1 bedroom apartment, which was spotless, had every amenity required (full kitchen, dining talbe, sitting area, balcony) and was near the shared pool. Although there were lots of cars at the resort, the pool was always quiet. The muffins and warm cookies with coffee or tea available at reception in the afternoon were addictive. The golf was expensive so we tried floodlit evening golf at the Links, Naples - an unchallenging, dull course but cheap and fun to try at night - although the bugs were unexpectedly bad. This resort was a delightful haven to return to after sightseeing in Naples and enjoying the fantastic wildlife at Cypress Bend and Corkscrew Swamp in the Everglades - after a short walk at both we saw hawks, allligators, snakes, raccoon, egrets, ibis, turtles, kites, wood stork, vultures etc....... Made a nice change from the standard hotels available.

Green Links Golf Resort: "A restful Florida spot"

Would I stay at this location again: absolutely!
Simply beautiful resort! A quiet, peaceful place to enjoy some Florida sunshine. The pool area is terrific - lots of space and few people! Kids had a ball, but wished there were more kids! The condo was meticulously clean and well-appointed with everything we needed. It's nestled in a lovely community. Morning muffins and homemade cookies made our day! We will definitely return.

Just returned from 5 day stay at Greenlinks, very quiet even though it was over easter. Lovely condo, absolutely spotless and everything in it you needed. Good location quite near to Naples, you do need a car though.
Although there is building work going on there at the moment it did not disturb us at all, all we could hear were a few reversing beeps.
The pool area was also lovely and clean and there were only a few other families dotted around - very peaceful.
Would definately go there again.

Resort: "Excellent Condo Facility!"

Would I stay at this location again: absolutely!
We rented a three bedroom Condo with our entire family and just thought the place was great. Short walk to the excellent pool area. Gas grills available at the pool too which we used every night. Condo was spotless on our arrival and kitchen was very well equipped. We will return on our next visit to Naples.

Naples: Green Links Golf Resort: "Superb Facility"
Feb 7, 2006: A TripAdvisor Member, Bingley, UK

My experience with this property took place in:
February, 2006

We originally booked into the Best Western Inn and Suites in Naples but were extremely disappointed when we arrived there and immediately started looking for soemwhere else to stay. Thank heavens for Trip Advisor.
We highlighted Green Links and I booked it on the Internet immediately.
What a fabulous place to stay and whilst it is a bit more expensive than many places, it is worth it.
We stayed in Block 1400 which gave us a great view of the golf course and the accommodation was amazing. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms with kitchen, lounge and external balcony. Extremely spacious and beautifully presented. Also very quiet.
Everything about this place is fantastic and I am planning to return in June to play golf with my two kids.
Highly recommended.

Stever, you're a doll! It hadn't even occurred to me to look at TA even though I use it for other hotels all the time. Thanks so much!

By the way, stever, your Naples expert can be found at http://p104.ezboard.com/feuropetogofrm12

He just answered my Naples questions on the United States and Canada board.

Thanks hdm - I'll check out the info that's available on that other board too them if I need to. I hate to stray from Fodors though! I can't believe there's so many travel web forums out there.

Yes,there are tons of good travel sites. I like Fodor's but I also check into Frommers, and TripAdvisor for hotel reviews and occasionally for the forums. I've posted hotel reviews there myself but I limit myself to Fodor's and TravelersToGo for forums. I don't think you have to feel wedded to just one board, especially if you know someone knowledgeable is somewhere else. Unfortunately, Patrick can't post here for a while but that shouldn't mean you have to do without his advice. I'm sure that's not Fodor's intention.

Patrick is back in a new form. It's the "new" Patrick.

stever, I've been reading your posts the past few days and I think you're on the right track. I'd stick with the Inn on Fifth.
I'm amused by the comments at the Bayshore Inn regarding quiet. While Fifth Avenue South and the Plaza outside the Inn on Fifth will indeed be crowded and rather noisy (not rowdy, and not much after about 11 PM) in March/April, the big problem with the Bayshore is that all the rooms face a little bit of bay but directly face the Gordon River Bridge, the main access into downtown from East US 41. If you open your doors there, the roar of traffic (including all delivery trucks) will certainly be far more annoying than a few people having fun in a plaza below you! Quiet? I think not! In addition there's now a sort of outdoor bar right over the water, just outside the hotel. Now that will be noisy!

It's funny. I never think about the Trianon, but it is only two blocks from me. That's interesting about the "smells" or "cleanliness" which surprises me. I've been in a couple of the larger rooms or "suites", and they are really very nice and large. It's more of a business hotel and I have visited fabric and designer reps who show there in their suites sometimes. The Trianon is 2 blocks south of Fifth Avenue in more of a residential area and is quiet. Nonetheless, I'd really stick with the Inn on Fifth, and since I spend half my life right next door at the Sugden Theatre, I'd love to join you for a drink at Yabba's or McCabe's sometime while you're here.

Ooops. My comments about Bayshore Inn of course really were meant to be about the Bayfront Inn. I can't keep their name straight since they recently changed from Comfort Inn.

Thx NeoPatrick and HDM.

Good stuff as usual from you folks. Yep, it looks like we'll just stay at the Inn on Fifth then. I'm sure it will be fine. I like to be in the middle of the action so the Inn sounds perfect.

At the Doral in Miami, they're giving us a Suite for only $199 a night, so we're ecstatic about that. Hope to drive to South Beach for the day one day and then maybe Key Biscayne beach another day for the day with our 12 year old who has never been to Florida and lives for the beaches.

Cheers,
Steve R
