I am planning a trip for husband's 50th. We are staying at Auberge du Soleil...currently have it booked for 5 nights. Need help w/itinerary...5 days in Napa seems like a lot. Should we stay one night in San Fran and 3 or 4 in Napa? Any help would be appreciated....

I would split it up. Either SF, or somewhere on the water. Inn Above the Tide in Sausalito.

That is a lovely property, but for me 2 or 3 nights in Napa would be plenty.

I agree w/ MichelleY - either SF (if you haven't been before) or - my choice - 2 nights on the coast. Sausalito is good or over in Bodega Bay or farther north.

5 nights in wine country wouldn't be too much for us, but 5 nights in one spot would be. If you're really into wine, and the whole vibe of driving around, doing tastings and tours, etc., consider dividing your time between Napa and, say, Healdsburg, or Sonoma.

If you're not THAT into wine, definitely spend a couple of nights in SF instead.

Obviously, depends on your interests. I would be bored after 2-3 days in Napa. My choice would be 2 nights San Francisco and 3 nights Napa (actually mine would be the other way around, but I would split it up)

You might consider 2 nights in Napa, then head north toward the Anderson and Russian River areas, and perhaps Mendocino. The rural contrast to the wall to wall wineries in Napa could be fun. For instance, there is a river beach in Monte Rio, the Skunk Train, a redwood forest, shops in Fort Bragg, and many more things to see and do, plus wineries, of course.
