My friends and I are planning a roadtrip around the US and have set aside 2 days in the Napa/Sonoma area. Does anyone know about nice campgrounds in these areas (preferably that do not allow RVs)? Also what is the word on making last minute reservations for car services, as we won't be sure the exact day that we will be there? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends where you are going in such a short time(or coming from), I would think. the first place that came to minf was Goat Rock (Sonoma)or a beach along Bodega Bay(if you are looking for an ocean view. Most campgrounds keep the RV's separate. You could try Lake Berryessa for the Napa area. If you are looking for a central KOA, there is one in Petaluma. I am sure you will see RV's there though!

Thanks very much for the input. We are traveling from either Yosemite area or the Lake Tahoe region so I was thinking of staying one night near Napa and the second night staying nearer the coast (depending on how we feel about packing up our tent again - probably not Although from reading the threads we may change that to just driving through Napa the first day and camping near Sonoma and doing a real wine tour around Sonoma the second day. Looks like Lake Berryessa or Goat Rock to me! Thanks again!

Check out Salt Point State Park(Jenner) in Sonoma County. Also..if you drive up HWY 1 towards Gualala you will come to the Ocean View Grocery Store. You can pay for land use in the area across the street for camping.(Ocean front) It's loose..but it's lovely.

Sonoma Sugarloaf state park is a good bet. It's up on the ridge between Napa & Sonoma valleys. If it is the campground that I think it is, then I have personally camped there and thought it was just fine. The road going up is kind of twisty, so there don't tend to be many RVs, tho' I can't guarantee none.

Another option would be at Lake Sonoma. I've never camped there, but I've ogled it, whilst driving through.

Both of these are nice and close to wine country, closer than Lake Berryessa, I think (not to knock LB).

Depending on what time of year you are planning to come, I can't really recommend camping on the coast. Coastal fog is cold and for my taste, no fun to camp in (everything gets damp and you can't see any stars).

Our idea of roughing it in Napa is a 65 mile bike ride and a stay at the Railway Inn.

Burkes Canoe rental has a camping grounds right on the Russian River in Forestville. Lots of wineries in the area.

And as a post scriptm while Napa Boethe State park also has camping, the sites are way too close to the road for my comfort.

Thanks for all the help. So many great options. I think I am going to stay off the coast for the overnight. I never considered the fog issue while camping. I am going to have to rethink the rest of my trip as visiting the beaches but not staying on them (I had Jalama beach as a favored spot but none of us surf so no use fighting to get in there and then just freeze all night).
