I'm trying to plan a short (~3 days) trip to Nantucket Island for this summer with a few of my friends (we are in high school). I know this is last minute, but does anyone have any tips on cheap(er) places to stay?

Don't stay on Nantucket would be my tip. You could stay in Hyannis and ride the ferry to Nantucket. It would help if you posted your budget though- what do you consider "cheap"? When I made reservations for Provincetown, 250-300 dollars per night BECAME cheap. And I remember Nantucket was much more expensive than that.

There's a hostel, but I really doubt you'll get even one bed at this point. There are other hostels on Cape Cod, too:

You may already be aware, but you probably need to be traveling with an adult. I don't think any motels will rent to someone under 18, I know hostels require adults as well.

Perhaps give Nantucket a miss entirely and look into camping on Martha's Vineyard? There's one campground: That will be cheaper- but if there are four of you total, about $86 for a tent site (they allowed a maximum of 4 people per site).

Also forgot to mention: from what I remember, the challenging part is finding a hotel that will rent a room to more than 2 adults.

But Hyannis hostel IS showing availibilty for August!! So check your dates and figure out the chaperone situation bunks $35, private room for 4 129! (I checked weekdays, first week of August. Prices might be higher on weekends).

I live on Nantucket and am in fact looking out the window at the beautiful cherry trees in bloom.

You are too young to rent a hotel room here ( or most other places). I would still get in touch with the hostel here. It is across the road from Surfside Beach and a block from the bus to town, so you don't always need to bike! The hostel and the beach will be a great location for meeting kids.

Has anybody got an older sister who could come along as your chaperone for the hostel? The first two weeks in August are the absolute peak of the crowds. The 17th everyone starts leaving to get their kids back in school. You might have better luck finding a place to stay after the 17th.

It isn't worth it to stay in Hyannis. The fast ferry only takes an hour each way, but it is expensive and parking will set you back $25 or so per day.

Nantucket is paradise, but you do need to be careful. If you miss the last bus and have to walk back to the hostel, there is a sketchy bar on the way, and bad things have happened to nice people on the road near there in the wee hours.

Why do you want to go to Nantucket - that would be my first question. It is beautiful. Maybe just because you have never been there. Both good reasons.

But shopping - really expensive. Beaches - very nice, but there are also some really nice Cape Cod or even South Shore (south of Boston) beaches. Food - also expensive. Bars - too young. Entertainment - lots of better places.

You are not going to be able to get around the age requirement of lodging. Even if you are 18, that is likely not old enough. Everyplace will ask of ID, so even if you get an older person to rent/pay ahead of time, this is not going to work.

I 100% endorse the idea of trip planning and travel - and there are many here who would be happy to help you plan a trip. But part of travel is dealing with practical realities. If you are 18, you might find a place on Cape Cod that would rent to you - but check it out ahead of time.
