Nantucket in either August or September

Planning a trip to Nantucket in either August or September. When would be a better time to go out East? Also, could you recommend places to stay, eat, etc. My husband and I would be celebrating our 2 year anniversary.

August or September are great times to go. The people who own homes always go out in September. Many of the college kids go back at the end of August so the service in restaurants, etc. requires some patience. September is beautiful but can be chilly. August is usually pretty sunny and warm.

I am going in August because I plan to bring a sitter and rent a little cottage. I love being in town and there are tons of B&Bs. The hotels are pretty expensive but you can't really go wrong because the people going are pretty demanding due to the cost of things on the Island. If you are looking for fancy you can go to The White Elephant or The Waiwinet Inn. The Harbor House is a nice place, pretty reasonable and right in town. Town is very nice to stay because then you don't really need a car and you can rent bikes easily and walk to dining places. You cannot go wrong. It is one of my favorite spots. Good Luck.

Nantucket is great! My husband's family has a house there. We love to go. We get July 4th week and then go back for Labor Day weekend with the whole family. The island "traffic" ends Labor Day weekend when everyone heads home and back to school. It is the most beautiful time to be there and there are still enough people to mingle with at the bars and restaurants. Weather is hit or miss, but there is enough to do if its too cold for the beaches. DO bring sweaters for the evenings. Dont know how far in advance you need to book for August, I think you may have better luck after Labor Day weekend. Also the price may come down a bit. I agree with Missy, you should find a place in town or within walking distance of town. They also have a shuttle bus system to take you out to some of the beaches. Fairly reliable, $1 each way. Stop at the "bandstand" for the most unbelievable mudslides you'll ever have. Feel free to email me if you want more info, let me know when you'll be there!

Unless you really want hot and sunny beach weather, it's far better to visit Nantucket after Labor Day, when the "summer folk", vacationers, and day trippers have left. The island is overcrowded in July and August. Many accomodations offer "shoulder season" rates right after Labor Day. The Chamber of Commerce publishes a fabulous visitor's guide, with comprehensive dining and lodging listings. They charge you for shipping and handling, but it's well worth the small fee. It's definitely best to leave your car behind and stay within walking distance of town.
