The only thing they warn you about in advance is that kids under 4 are not admitted to any Broadway Shows. That info comes on a tiny slip of paper when you get your tickets by mail. Use of gunshots, strobe lites, etc. are usually on a warning sign posted at the theater (I suppose to pre-warn people with health issues that this may be a problem for). The only way to find out about vulgarity or nudity is to read the reviews in Time Out NY or NY Magazine, etc. Children between the ages of 4 and 18 are allowed to see ANY show, provided they are accompanied by an adult. I can't believe it myself, but that's the way it is. Same thing with R rated movies, yet I see plenty of young teens (13, 14, etc.,) unsupervised & can't believe their parents know they are there. Or maybe they don't. They may have said they were going to one movie, and then snuck into another. That is one huge downside to multiplex theaters.

If you want to find out if a show is inappropriate for children of a certain age (not whether they'll like it, but whether it will be thematically inappropriate), look up the show on www.telecharge.com, which lists most Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, though not all (and not the Disney ones). In the show info section, they will say, in addition to no children under 4 admitted, "this show is appropriate for children ___ and older." Consider this a minimum and then judge if the show is right for your kids.

Beauty & the Beast is the ONLY show on Broadway that does not have an age limit. You may bring a 2 year old. However, 2 year olds tend to get frightened by the Beast & the darker portion of the show. If the 2 year old starts to cry, you will spend your time in the lobby with him/her. Blue Man Tubes absolutely enforces the 4 yr + rule as well. And, FYI, so does the other Disney production, the Lion King. Apparently the death of Simba's father is distressing for the littler ones.

Skip Kiss Me Kate with a 10 year old. I think Annie Get Your Gun would be a great choice. Also consider Disney's latest: Aida. Another choice might be Saturday Night Fever. We had 2 10 year olds sitting in front of us a few months ago and they loved the music and dancing.

Thanks for the tip. I'm glad to learn this now instead of after standing in line at the TKTS booth. By the way -- the online site for TKTS says it is suspending postings for a few days -- does that mean no ticket sales or just that they are not listing them online? anyone know?

I went to NYC this past summer with a group of about 50 kids , including my own 10 and 16 yer olds. We saw Lion King, Aida, and Les Mis. The favorite of the group by far was Aida! In fact, it is coming to Seattle in May and we are going again. They liked it much better than Lion King. We have also seen Phantom and all have loved it.
