Myrtle Beach
Hi,
Can anyone give me some ideas about the beaches in Myrtle Beach ? Is North Myrtle Beach very commercialized and crowded ?
How about the Cherry Grove Beach area ?
Tilghman Beach section ?
Is South Myrtle Beach section quieter than North Section ? Thanks for any info

Stay clear of cherry grove. Not a great part of town. If you want quiet stay in Murrells Inlet - aobut 20 min south of the strand.
N. Myrtle Beach is a little quieter, but still pretty commercial. But still fun w/ lots of restaurants, plus beach. If you want really quiet I would suggest Hilton Head instead.

michelle,
Joan has given you some good ideas. I live in Crescent Beach, so I only go to Cherry Grove for one thing: Duffy Street Seafood Shack. I'm not sure what Joan has against Cherry Grove, but I am not in a position to contradict her.
Tilghman Beach is between kind of between Ocean Drive section and Cherry Grove--I think that would be a great place to stay. Ocean Drive section North of Main Street has some beautiful homes and few large resorts, so it's going to be less crowded on the beach.
South Myrtle will probably be quieter than the North section, but I like the North section a little better. Hey, I'm biased--I live here. That said, you may want to consider Surfside or Garden City Beach. Not as far South as Litchfield or Murrels Inlet, and both have retained a beach cottage character more than MB or North Myrtle Beach.
The beaches along the grand strand are generally wide and flat--good for walking.
North Myrtle Beach, by my rough estimate, has the following types of oceanfront accomodations, divided into thirds: (1) 12 to 18 story condominiums; (2) 1 or 2 story mom & pop hotels; and (3) 3 to 5 story older condominium buildings. First row back and further are almost all houses or duplexes. Along Business 17 (which runs parallel to the beach road but about 1/2 mile West) you will find lots of restaurants, shops, stores etc.
The heart of Myrtle Beach (say from about 23th Avenue North to about 17th Avenue South) is probably 3/4 large condominium buildings (20-plus stories) and 1/4 smaller hotels.
From North to South, I don't think you'd really go wrong at Tilghman Beach, Ocean Drive, Crescent Beach, Windy Hill (especially Ocean Creek Resort), Arcadia (where Kingston Plantation is, a great place), MB North of the Pavillion (9th Avenue North), Surfside, Litchfield, or Pawley's Island.
Have a great time!

We have vacationed in Garden City many times. We ususally rent a house for a week (Dunes Realty). Have also stayed at Holden Beach. In North MB area we have stayed several times a Forest Dunes condos, very nice except you must cross the street to get to the beach, as we had small children this was a concern. Hope this helps.
