Music related things to do in NYC

Hello.

I am looking for fun music type of things to do in NYC. I'm not really into the clubbing scene but love listening to music. Looking for any interesting activities apart from the usual broadway show. Mostly interested in jazz, reggae, and really just about anything. I know this question may be somewhat open but I am really open for just about anything.

I'm also looking for some really interesting little, local music record shops apart from the typical big H&M or Virgin stores. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Well there are many music related options. Lincoln Center has always got something going, Central Park has many concerts in the summer and there are several jazz clubs in the village. Probably your best bet is to buy Time Out magazine when you get to NYC. It lists all the events and reviews many of them. Also pick up a free copy of The Village Voice at kiosks around the city.

For record shops you should visit Greenwich Village. There are many scattered throughout the village (try a walk on Bleeker Street). Time Out and Village Voice will also help you to locate smaller record shops.

Also here is a good website to do some research http://newyork.citysearch.com/

You should check out Time Out New York. This is a magazine in NYC and I think they also have a website although it might be TONY.

It will list all kinds of music offerings from classical and cabaret to who's playing in the clubs. Enjoy!

Where to start... BB Kings Blues Club on W 42nd is IMO the nicest venue in town and has a wide array of musical genres. Irving Plaza has good live shows but can be crowded (standing only). Lots of good up and coming acts at Mercury Lounge and Arlene Grocey. Good singer/songwriters at the Elbow Room, the Living Room. Also see that genre at the Bitter End along with rock acts on some nights. Bitter End has NY Songwriter's Circle one Monday every month - published songwriters perform and discuss their work - very interesting and only $5 admission. Tribeca Blues on Bleecker has some good blues acts and there are other live music clubs on Bleecker. Tonic on lower east side has some more avant garde and world music type acts as does Knitting Factory in SoHo. Joe's Pub has some killer jazz and cabaret acts and is a great room but is $$. Bottom Line has some GREAT acts but it's crowded w/weak overpriced drinks and the owner "reserves" all the best tables for his cronies and industry friends. Good jazz at Village Vanguard, Small's and others. More well known jazz acts at Iridium and at Blue Note but both are $$. Citysearch and www.villagevoice.com are great resources for info on music scene. I've only touched a few highlights here but as a music fan who's in the NYC area I have gone to most of these and many other clubs. Feel free to put together a list of some you're considering a visit to and repost or email me - I'll be glad to offer my (highly biased) opinions on them.
